Group Workshop on Globalization The Global Revolutionists Prem (Malaysia) Yadav (Nepal) Gazelle (Philippines) Riris (Indonesia)

Effect of Globalization To Workers Decline of jobs & employments for unskilled workers Increase of volumes of jobs for skilled workers Employment Flexibility (Subcontracting, outsourcing, privatization, rightsizing, downsizing, streamlining, re-engineering) Rich gets richer, poor gets poorer BPO business caused more revenues for the Philippines and Malaysia

Effects of Globalization To unions Decrease in membership Employment flexibility (union members who are rank & file are transferred to supervisory positions) Increase in obstacles in organizing the unorganized

Major Changes in Economic & Labor Policies Implementation of self-assessment tests to companies on their compliance with labor standards (Philippines) Prioritization of telecommunications and transportation over basic needs such as health care systems Labor policies now indirectly support child labor and forced labor and cause migrant workers to receive low wages Occupational safety and health is compromised

Trade Union Actions Ensuring the enforcement of ratified ILO Core Labor Standards especially Convention Numbers 87 & 98 Conduct of awareness-raising activities to trade union leaders, members and workers Holding of educational trainings Create added value to workers to have multi tasking skills Increase efficient and effective social dialogues with tripartite bodies Involve trade unions in labor laws/policies amendments

Role of International Trade Union Movement Development of global framework agreement (e.g., for standardization of salaries and working conditions, etc.,) Transfer of technology, knowledge, skills and programs Campaign for global awareness Include unions in Free Trade Agreements Negotiations Solidarity support
