5 Geographic Regions of GEORGIA Appalachian Plateau Located in the northwestern corner of the state The smallest of the regions in GA Lookout Mountain Plateau and various caves are the major landforms with valley below Nickname is the TAG corner. It stands for Tennessee, Alabama, & Georgia

5 Geographic Regions of GEORGIA Appalachian Plateau Lookout Mountain stretches for 31 miles in GA (over 100 miles) Points of interest include: Chickamauga Military Parks, Lookout Mountain, Rock City and Cloudland Canyon State Park Cities : Trenton and Lafayette

5 Geographic Regions of GEORGIA Ridge and Valley Located in the north central part of the state Landforms consist of low open valleys & narrow ridges that run parallel to valleys The soil in the region consist of shale, clay, limestone & sandstone

5 Geographic Regions of GEORGIA Ridge and Valley Cities include: Dalton, Ellijay, Cartersville and Rome Many apple orchards are found near Ellijay Dominated by various types of industry especially textile and carpet Dalton = “The Carpet Capitol of the World”

5 Geographic Regions of GEORGIA Blue Ridge Located in the northeastern corner of the state The soil consist of sandy loam (clay, sand , & leaves - organic matter) and just clay in other parts Unfortunately, the soil type and slope of the ground leads to erosion Highest & largest group of mountains can be found here Brasstown Bald = highest point in GA (4,784 ft above sea level)

Blue Ridge Region contains the start Appalachian Trail (AT) at Springer Mountain (stretches for 2,144 miles from GA to ME) Amicalola Falls = largest waterfall in GA (over 700 ft.) Other points of interest = Tallulah Gorge (1,000 ft) & the city of Helen (Alpine Village) Cities include Dahlonega, Helen, Blairsville, and Hiawassee

5 Geographic Regions of GEORGIA Piedmont Located in the central part of the state Piedmont = “Foot of mountain” The soil in this region is clay. Underneath the surface in the Piedmont, areas of bedrock (solid rock) consisting of mostly granite, Marble can be found Home to GA’s state capital, Atlanta Other cities include: Atlanta, Athens, Gainesville, Augusta Macon and Columbus

5 Geographic Regions of GEORGIA Piedmont The region makes up 1/3 of the state’s land area ½ of the entire state’s population lives here Known as the cotton belt of antebellum days Many industries have been founded in the Piedmont Region including the following: Chick-fila, Coca-Cola, & Home Depot

5 Geographic Regions of GEORGIA Coastal Plain Located in the southern half of the state Comprises 3/5 of the land Soil in the region consist of sand, limestone & some clay The outer part of coastal plain has poor soil and lacks fertile farmland (swampy/marshy)

5 Geographic Regions of GEORGIA Major agricultural region of the state The region also produces large amounts of peanuts, corn and pecans. Contains the cities of Savannah, Valdosta, and Albany

5 Geographic Regions of GEORGIA Coastal Plain Produces large amounts of paper products known as pulp production (made from wood) Location of GA’s two-deep water harbors (ports): Brunswick and Savannah

Fall Line ADD TO YOUR NOTES A natural boundary that separates the Piedmont from the Coastal Plain regions of Stretches from the cities of Columbus to Macon to Augusta Flowing water from higher elevation cuts deep channels into the sandy soil of the coastal plains A drop in elevation results in a waterfall The fall line prevented many early settlers from continuing northward. WHY ?
