2.1 Notes: What is Matter? Main Idea 1: Chemistry is the study of the composition, structure, properties, and changes of matter.
Matter Define: Anything that has mass & takes up space! Examples: You, Air, Water, Space station, atoms, beards
Atom Define: The smallest unit of an element. Basic matter! Examples: Hydrogen, Oxygen, Calcium, Gold, Neon
Main Idea 2: Matter can be classified Based on its properties.
Classifying Matter Pure Substance Describe: Has a fixed composition, definite properties, & cannot be physically separated ex’s: water, sugar, chlorine gas.
Pure Substance Element Describe: Matter in which all atoms are the same. ex’s: nitrogen, iron
Pure Substance Compound Describe: Made of two or more elements chemically united. ex’s: water, salt, sugar
Mixtures grapes + sugar + water Describe: A combo of two or more pure substances that can be physically separated.
Heterogeneous Mixture Describe: Mixture that has 2 or more distinguishable parts & can easily be physically separated. ex: salad, mixed candies
Homogeneous Mixture Describe: Mixture of 2 or more substances that cannot be not easily separated & all looks the same. ex: grape juice, mixed batter
