Chapter 2 Section 1 pages 36-43 Water in the Air Chapter 2 Section 1 pages 36-43 ~Focus points~ weather water cycle 3 forms of water humidity evaporation condensation dew point cloud precipitation
Weather The condition of the atmosphere at a particular time and place.
~Water Cycle~ Continuous movement of water from water sources into the atmosphere, and back onto/into ground and back to water sources. H2O
Clouds Condensation Precipitation Evaporation Transpiration Run off Solar Precipitation Evaporation Transpiration Run off Ground Water Water Cycle
Gas~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 3 Forms/States of Water 1. Solid~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2. Liquid~~~~~~~~~~~~ Gas~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 3.
Humidity & Relative Humidity Humidity: Amount of water vapor or moisture in the air. Relative Humidity (%): amount of moisture the air contains compared to amount it can hold.
Evaporation Liquid changing into water vapor (gas). Rising into atmosphere. Example- wet-to-dry chalkboard
Transpiration Water vapor The process where plants release water vapor into the air through their leaves.
Condensation Process of water vapor (gas) becomes a liquid. This happens during 100% relative humidity when air cools. Example: shower mirror moisture
Dew Point Air around the glass cooling Temperature that the air must cool to, to be completely saturated. Ex: Ice in a glass cools the surrounding air. The glass gives the water vapor a surface to condense on.
Collection of million water droplets or ice crystals Cloud Collection of million water droplets or ice crystals Forms as warm air rises 3 Types 1. Cummulus 2. Stratus 3. Cirrus
Precipitation Water that falls from the atmosphere to the Earth 4 types 1. rain - liquid water 2. snow - frozen water 3. sleet - freezing rain (winter) 4. hail - balls of ice (spring/summer)

What is a water shed?? Land area where water run off (rain and snow) drains into a marsh, stream, lake, reservoir, or ground water. Water quality is a reflection of land uses of a particular water shed area.
What is Run Off?
?Pollution? 1. Non Point Source 2. Point Source Negative effect on our environment Different forms (air, water…) 2 types of water pollution 1. Non Point Source 2. Point Source
1. Non Point Source ~~~~~~~~ Known as polluted run off Cannot be traced back to source From scattered sources Leading cause of US water pollution We are the solution
Non Point Source examples Excess fertilizers, insecticides.. Oil, grease and toxic chemicals Bacteria from livestock, pets…
2. Point Source Pollution ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pollutants that can be traced to a source. Examples: Factories discharge pipe Sewage ditch
