Presentation transcript:

Randolf Caldecott was considered by many to be the best illustrator of children’s books inthe world. So much so that in the USA, there is a prize given every year, the Caldecott Medal, for the illustrator who produces what the judges consider to be the best illustrated children’s book of that year.

The Caldecott Medal is based on this illustration by Randolf Caldecott. The illustration on the Caldecott Medal, which is taken from Caldecott's illustrations for "The Diverting Story of John Gilpin," is a perfect example of the humor, vitality, and sense of movement found in Caldecott's work. The illustration shows John Gilpin astride a runaway horse, accompanied by squawking geese, braying dogs, and startled onlookers.

What do you see on the Caldecott Medal? Look at the medal for 60 seconds, then cover it up. See how many elements of the design you can remember!
