Principles of Systems Engineering

Historical Perspective Industry identified a knowledge gap Lockheed pursued MJSP(MN Job Skills Partnership) and investigated potential partnership opportunities MJSP designee contacted U of M in 2001 U of M research determined no other comparable SE program available to serve extensive industry and business needs in the Twin Cities and surrounding area Grant developed and approved by MJSP February 2002 CCE worked with Lockheed Martin to establish a Systems Engineering Certificate program – at the time the only one in Minnesota and one of only 34 programs nationwide

Original Collaborators and Partners University Of Virginia Institute of Technology Mechanical Engineering Department Carlson School Of Management U of MN Industry (Lockheed Martin) INCOSE Center for Technological Leadership U of MN College of Continuing Education

Original Certificate Program Principles of Systems Engineering Systems Engineering Practices I Systems Engineering Practices II Systems Engineering Modeling & Simulation Systems Engineering Management

Principles of Systems Engineering Provides an integrated introduction to systems methodology, system life cycle processes design and management Provides an overview of system engineering Examines role of systems engineering and systems integration Designed to instruct the collaborative processes used to manage transformation of technical innovation to profitable new products. Length: 40 hours

SE Practices I and II These two courses focused on: The successful development of complex systems from operations analysis and requirement management The comprehensive system design process Methodologies that can be used to model complex technical systems Length: 160 hours

Systems Modeling & Simulation Designed to provide an understanding of the interdisciplinary aspects of systems analysis, modeling, and simulation. Topics include use of design evaluations using model and simulation, systems model development, systems simulation, and prototyping. Length: 40 hours

Systems Engineering Management An introduction to the relevant issues and required techniques for the successful management of the development of technical systems. Some of the topics include project planning, proposal management, project metrics and reporting, risk management, configuration management, quality management, security, and program reviews. Length: 40 hours

Optional: Statistics for Systems Engineering Key learning objectives: Provide foundations of the statistical techniques – background, applications and examples Provide training on a computer analysis tool – Minitab statistical software Analyze the computer output Explain the results to upper management – in language that can be understood Length: 40 hours

Delivery Formats Classroom –40 hours –Typically taught over 5 consecutive weeks –Instructor: John Palmer Online –40 hours –Typically taught over 10 consecutive weeks –Instructor: Dave Walden
