Presentation transcript:

Public Worship in a Mosque Prayer is considered the second pillar of Islam. It is the most significant ritual in the life of a Muslim. Islam commands prayers to be performed 5 times a day. Prayer can be both private and public acts.

Purpose of Prayer Prayer aims at connecting the individual with his Creator. It provides time out to reflect and appreciate the bounties of God. It aims to curb the temptations that influence immoral behaviour. It reminds us of the relationship between the Creator and the created. It provides an opportunity for self cleansing and forgiveness. The first act for which Muslims will be held accountable is their prayers.

Prayers at the Mosque It is encouraged that Muslims perform their prayers in the mosque. Before prayers are conducted, a washing ritual is performed, called Wudu. Prayers begin with the call for prayer called the Azan. We begin the prayer by facing Mecca, usually with an Imam leading the prayer.

Text from the Quran and the Sunnah on Prescribed Prayers Allah (s.w.t) said: “ Prayers have been prescribed for the believers at set times” [Al-Nisa, 4: 103] Prophet Muhammad said: “There are five prayers which god has prescribed for his servants. For those who perform them properly, without disrespectful omissions, there is a guarantee that God will admit them to paradise. To those who do not observe them however, God offers no such guarantee. He may punish them or may admit them to paradise as he wills.” Another saying: “The key to paradise is ritual prayer” According to tradition: “Of all a mans actions, the first to be examined on the day of resurrection will be the prayer. If it is found to be complete, it will be accepted of him along with the rest of his works, but if it is found wanting, it will be rejected along with the rest of his deeds

Continued………. The Prophet said: “Abu Hurayra, command your family to perform prayers, for God will provide you with blessings, too numerous to reckon.”

Friday Prayer (Jumah Prayer) 62:9 O ye who believe! When the call is proclaimed to prayer on Friday (the Day of Assembly), hasten earnestly to the Remembrance of Allah, and leave off business (and traffic): That is best for you if ye but knew!
