Meet the Experts Thinkport.org

What will I be when I grow up? A question we have all asked… Some us may still ask!

How do you achieve a goal 1 st you need to know that “it” is an option Next, learn the pros and cons Figure out what skills you will need Gain the skills you need to achieve your goal GO!

How did I use Meet the Experts? Students completed an interest inventory Each week they selected a scientist to interview (for 13 weeks) Gathered information Evaluated the information and determined which aspects of the job match their own interests. Selected the career that they liked best!

Created a “wanted poster” Outlined job Skills needed Tools needed Schooling required Job outlook Money

Motivation The “beauty of adolescence” We can’t push them…they will dig in their heels Challenge them, help them to see the purpose and direct them, and they can achieve amazing things. It all comes down to whether or not they want to.

Lunchtime Lecture Series Invite local scientists Parents Colleagues Students bring their lunch into class and get to meet with a real life “scientist” Complete the assignment as described except they need to come in advance to get a ticket and they must formulate 3 questions that they would like to ask the speaker “Getting out of doing something”

Meet the Expert: Lesson Seed Standard 1.0 Skills and Processes, Topic E. History of Science Expectation: n/a Indicator 1. Explain how people from ancient times to the present have investigated the world around us, answered scientific questions and invented things Objective c. Describe the evolution of careers in Biology, chemistry, physics, Earth, space and environmental science due to advances in science and technology Assessment limit: n/a Materials and/or Set Up Log sheet to be used with interviews, Career Profile worksheet (from the Teacher Tips, Suggested Activities section of the Meet the Experts interactive, poster paper, art supplies for "Wanted Poster" activity Relevant Vocabulary n/a Introduction/Motivation n/a

Activities Discuss the diversity of careers that are related to science. Introduce the relationship between science education and possible careers.Have students complete the “My Career Goals” column of the Career Profile worksheet to identify their own likes/dislikes and how those preferences will affect their career path. Have students preview the questions that will be asked of each scientist. Instruct students to log on to the website once a week, select 1 scientist to "interview,” and record their findings on the log sheet. After completing 4 interviews, have students select 1 of the 4 to evaluate using the Career Profile Worksheet.

Have students continue until they have interviewed 12 experts and compared the three careers they selected to evaluate using the Career Profile worksheet to their own career goal preferences. Have students investigate the Job Outlook for their chosen career. This will provide them with potential salary as well as hiring potential. The guidance department can be a resource for this information. Have students create a "Wanted Poster" for their chosen career. On this poster, the students will include information that they learned from the expert interview as well as additional details described in the assignment sheet and grading tool. Conclusion/Wrap Up Display posters and have students participate in a gallery walk to share their selections. Follow Up/Extension n/a
