The World of Science

What Is Science? Science is the study of the world around us.

scientists Whenever you observe the world around you and ask questions, you are acting like a scientist. WHAT DO SCIENTISTS DO? –Question what they see & wonder what makes things the way they are –Attempt to find answers to their questions

scientists The goal of science is to understand the world around us. To achieve this goal, scientists: –Make observation and ask questions. –They devise ways of finding answer to those questions –They gather evidence to support their findings and draw conclusions.

Scientific method A series of steps that scientists take in order to answer a question.

What are the major branches of science? Physical Science Life Science Earth Science

What Is Life Science? Life science is the study of living things (organisms). Life science is also called biology. (Bio-= life, -logy= study of) Botany Zoology Ornithology Ichthyology Anatomy/Physiology

What Is Earth Science? Earth science is the study of earth and space. Some branches of earth science are: –Geology (geo-: earth). –Astronomy (astr-: star) –Oceanography (-graph: picture)

What Is Physical Science? Physical science is the study of matter & energy. Some branches of physical science are: –Chemistry: atoms, elements, molecules… –Physics: gravity, pressure, electricity…
