Lesson 4: Chemical and Physical Changes

 Lab #1: Elephant Toothpaste H 2 O 2 H 2 O + O 2 = Chemical Change  Lab #2: Change in State of Matter Ice Liquid Water Water Vapor (gas) = Physical Change

 A new substance with new properties is formed. Leaves Changing Color Rusting Nail Wood Burning H 2 O 2 H 2 O + O 2  Oxygen gas and water are new substances.  The hydrogen peroxide is gone.

 Matter changes phase or shape, but it is still the same substance with the same properties. Melting Ice Breaking Glass Dissolving Sugar in Water Melting Ice is still water. Ice Liquid Water Water Vapor (gas)

Question:YesNo Was a new substance formed? ChemicalPhysical Have the properties of the substance changed? ChemicalPhysical Is it reversible?PhysicalChemical Can the new substance be separated back into its original parts? PhysicalChemical

 Identifying Physical and Chemical Changes worksheet
