List Five Definitions  Hierarchy- a system or organization in which people or groups are ranked one above the other according to status or authority  Allegiance- loyalty or commitment of a subordinate to a superior or of an individual to a group or cause.  Fealty- the obligation or the engagement to be faithful to a lord, usually sworn to by a vassal.  Manorialism- in medieval times, the organization of rural economy and society in which the land holding nobles owned self-sufficient estates worked on by legally obligated peasants  Feudalism-A social system in which the ruler gives lands to nobles in exchange for loyalty and military service

List Five Definitions  Secular- denoting attitudes, activities, or other things that have no religious or spiritual basis.  Ecclesiastical- of or relating to a church especially as an established institution  Clergy- the body of all people ordained for religious duties, especially in the Christian Church.  Serf-an agricultural laborer bound under the feudal system to work on his lord's estate.  Vassal-a person or country in a subordinate position to another.

Medieval/Middle Ages  Terms are often interchangeable  Refers to the period of time from the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in the 5 th century CE until the collapse of the Eastern Roman Empire in 1453 CE  Without a strong central government, what do you think life in Europe was like back then?
