GROWING TRENDS IN CANADA What are the major forces that are shaping today’s social trends?

THE ECONOMY  TEENAGER EMPLOYMENT  In 2000, teenagers worked an average of 32 minutes per day  34 percent of boys, 40 percent of girls aged 15 to 18 reported having a job in 2006  more girls employed, but boys work more hours  most students work in low-paying service, clerical or sales jobs  highest proportion come from middle-class  negative impact on academics, sleep

 CHALLENGES FACING YOUNG WORKERS  getting in – unemployment rate in 2012 was 14.7%  always the hardest hit during a recession  competing against delayed retirement  no choice but to return to school, obtain new skills, broaden opportunities
