1. Protein has multiple functions Build and repair body tissue Maintain cell growth Energy

2. How often must protein be replenished? Must be supplied daily. Constantly needed to replace wear and tear of tissue and keep up protein concentration in the blood serum

3. Why can protein take the place of carbs and fat? Protein provides energy! Can take the place of some fat and carbohydrate Excess protein converted to energy Stored as fat

4. Carbs and Fats cannot take the place of protein . . . Needed to replace wear and tear of tissue.

5. What are the best source of protein? Milk Eggs Fish Poultry Red Meat

6. What happens to excessive amounts of protein? 1. Converted back to energy 2. May do more harm than good

7. What are amino acids? Building Blocks from which new proteins are made.                                                                 

8. How many essential amino acids are necessary? There are 22 different ones, but 9 are essential for good health.

17. How can animal proteins be extended? By adding a little protein and other nutrients like carbs: Chicken and Rice Chili con carne Macaroni and Cheese Tuna Noodle Casserole

18. How does the body use protein when there are not enough carbs or fats in the diet? Protein is burned for energy. Each gram of protein has 4 calories.

19. How much protein is required each day? Based on a 2000 calorie diet 5 ½ to 6 oz. per day.
