For math, students are grouped at the beginning of every unit based on pretest performance. They will be in either the enrichment, grade level or extra practice group. Teachers will rotate as well. We will begin grouping with Unit 2. For content instruction, students will move from classroom to classroom. Mrs. Strout will teach Science, Mrs. Kling will teach PSSA/Health and Mrs.Carney will teach Social Studies. Students will receive instruction in each content area 2 times per week. See schedule for rotation. Within our classroom, students will be grouped for part of the language arts instruction. We will do whole group instruction for English and the reading anthology story. Students will be grouped for leveled reader instruction into above level, on level, and below level groups. Spelling lists will be individually differentiated based on pretest performance. Spelling tests will not always be on Fridays. Check the homework page, the calendar on my website or your child’s agenda for the date of the test.

1.Positive comments only. 2.Raise your hand if you would like to share something. 3.Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. 4.Be prepared for school. 5. Respect yourself and others.

The following ideals have been adopted school-wide as part of the Olweus Bully Prevention Program. Have Fun Be Here Be Safe Commit to Goals Be Honest & Respectful Let Go & Move On Care for Self & Others

For monitoring of individual behavior, we use a check mark system.  1 st Warning - The first time we have to address a behavior with a child, his/her name will go on the board as a warning.  2 nd Warning – The second time inappropriate behavior is addressed, a check mark is placed beside the name and the student will walk laps for 10 minutes.  3 rd Warning – The third time inappropriate behavior is addressed, a second check mark is placed beside the name and the student stay in from recess to complete an activity correlating to the curriculum. **Some behavioral offenses warrant automatic loss of recess or more stringent disciplinary measures.

 For a class reward, students will play a version of Lingo. On a chart numbered 1-25, the class will choose a number when receiving a compliment. When Lingo is achieved, the class will receive a predetermined amount a minutes for free time.  Individuals will be reinforced with tickets given randomly for top notch work or model behavior. Students can save tickets to be redeemed for incentives.  Students will always be rewarded with the knowledge that they have done their best work.

 As a group, the current 5 th graders have done very well on the PSSA in both 3 rd and 4 th grades.  We will do activities throughout the year to prepare for the PSSA test.  SAVE THE DATE – PSSA  Writing Test window – March 11-15, 2013  Reading and Math Test window– April 8-19, 2013  ****Please note – Educational Trips taken during test dates will be UNEXCUSED ABSENCES.

Homework is an important follow-up for the work we do throughout the day. It is designed to reinforce concepts introduced in the classroom. The 5 th Grade homework policy is as follows: If a child misses a homework, he/she will be issued a homework slip that needs to be signed and returned along with the homework the following day. Supporting your child with homework is encouraged; however, homework needs to be done in your child’s writing. Once 3 homework slips have been issued, students will be assigned a detention. Detention may also be assigned when the child has an accumulation of any combination of 3 homework slips and conduct forms. Please support your child with homework completion. Students should not rush to complete homework, just to say it is done! Please encourage him/her to do his/her best work!

 Math – Math Boxes, tests, Friday quizzes, and PSSA preparation activities  Reading – Completion of after reading activities including selection tests, comprehension skill activities and book projects  English – Practice book pages, projects, writing pieces, journals and quizzes  Spelling – Tests, practice activities and the accuracy of spelling in writing activities  Social Studies – Tests, quizzes, in class activities and various projects  Science and Health – Tests, quizzes, health activities, performance during science investigations, observations Grades will be determined using the following assessment tools: Participation is a vital part of the educational experience and will be considered when assigning grades as well.
