In the Trenches: Scientific Outreach from the Perspective of a Working Scientist Andrea D. Wolfe Department of Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology The Ohio State University

Why bother??? l Kansas and all other “balanced treatment” efforts l Yellowstone, Los Alamos, Southern California wildfires l Genetic engineering and genetically modified organisms l School funding, higher education, $$$ for basic research

Perception of the problem l More than half of students in introductory course at OSU had never traveled outside Ohio l More than 90% believe that technology will solve all environmental problems l Almost half had a conflict with religion and science l Most think that science is beyond their ability

Examples of Scientific Outreach for Botanists - Academic l Teach in the non-majors biology courses l Sponsor undergraduate research experiences l Sponsor high school student research l Serve as a science fair judge l Assist in K-12 workshops through education department

Scientific Outreach for Botanists - Connecting with the Public l Opportunities with children u Youth organizations u K-12 interaction u Volunteering with parks, zoos, etc. l Opportunities with adults u Garden clubs and plant associations u Tap into your hobbies l Using the web as a tool for outreach

Central Ohio Woodturners

Outreach Opportunities in Woodworking & Woodturning l The botany of wood u Grain and figure u Stems and roots u Burls, burrs, disease l Sustainable logging l Biodiversity l Biomes of the world

Using the Web for Outreach l Taxon-specific websites u Especially effective for horticulturally and agriculturally important plants l Technique-oriented websites u ISSR Resource Website l Courses and course pages on the web l Web pages on research

How much time??? l Not a big investment in the overall scale of a busy academic schedule u Maybe one or two weekends a year for scouts, one evening a month for committee work u An afternoon here and there for K-12 u A few hours every couple of months for interaction with fellow crafters u An occasional evening for other efforts u A bit more time for web based efforts

How does it benefit us? l Scientific outreach is important to the university l We can make some contribution to improving scientific literacy l We are public employees - people like to know how their tax money is spent l It’s fun!
