Hebrews 8:4,5 New King James Version 4 For if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts according to the law; 5 who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.” Soldiers of the Cross

The First Census of Israel (Numbers 1) 1 Now the LORD spoke to Moses in the Wilderness of Sinai, in the tabernacle of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying: 2 “Take a census of all the congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, every male individually, 3 from twenty years old and above—all who are able to go to war in Israel. You and Aaron shall number them by their armies. By Przemek Boloz, 2011

Numbers 2 New International Version - UK (NIVUK) The Arrangement of the Tribal Camps 1 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron: 2 The Israelites are to camp round the Tent of Meeting some distance from it, each man under his standard with the banners of his family. 3 On the east, towards the sunrise, the divisions of the camp of Judah are to encamp under their standard. The leader of the people of Judah is Nahshon son of Amminadab. 4 His division numbers 74,600. By Przemek Boloz, 2011

5 The tribe of Issachar will camp next to them. The leader of the people of Issachar is Nethanel son of Zuar. 6 His division numbers 54, The tribe of Zebulun will be next. The leader of the people of Zebulun is Eliab son of Helon. 8 His division numbers 57, All the men assigned to the camp of Judah, according to their divisions, number 186,400. They will set out first. By Przemek Boloz, 2011

10 On the south will be the divisions of the camp of Reuben under their standard. The leader of the people of Reuben is Elizur son of Shedeur. 11 His division numbers 46, The tribe of Simeon will camp next to them. The leader of the people of Simeon is Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai. 13 His division numbers 59, The tribe of Gad will be next. The leader of the people of Gad is Eliasaph son of Deuel. 15 His division numbers 45, All the men assigned to the camp of Reuben, according to their divisions, number 151,450. They will set out second. By Przemek Boloz, 2011

17 Then the Tent of Meeting and the camp of the Levites will set out in the middle of the camps. They will set out in the same order as they encamp, each in his own place under his standard. 18 On the west will be the divisions of the camp of Ephraim under their standard. The leader of the people of Ephraim is Elishama son of Ammihud. 19 His division numbers 40, The tribe of Manasseh will be next to them. The leader of the people of Manasseh is Gamaliel son of Pedahzur. 21 His division numbers 32, The tribe of Benjamin will be next. The leader of the people of Benjamin is Abidan son of Gideoni. 23 His division numbers 35, All the men assigned to the camp of Ephraim, according to their divisions, number 108,100. They will set out third. By Przemek Boloz, 2011

25 On the north will be the divisions of the camp of Dan, under their standard. The leader of the people of Dan is Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai. 26 His division numbers 62, The tribe of Asher will camp next to them. The leader of the people of Asher is Pagiel son of Ocran. 28 His division numbers 41, The tribe of Naphtali will be next. The leader of the people of Naphtali is Ahira son of Enan. 30 His division numbers 53, All the men assigned to the camp of Dan number 157,600. They will set out last, under their standards. By Przemek Boloz, 2011

Numbers 2 (Total - NKJV) 44 These are the ones who were numbered, whom Moses and Aaron numbered, with the leaders of Israel, twelve men, each one representing his father’s house. 45 So all who were numbered of the children of Israel, by their fathers’ houses, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war in Israel— 46 all who were numbered were six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty. By Przemek Boloz, 2011

Additional facts Twelve tribes are mentioned, but not the tribe of Levi. Yet the number twelve is maintained because from Jacob’s son Joseph, two tribes came (Ephraim and Manasseh). In this first census Manasseh is the smallest tribe and Judah is the largest. There are two tribes in the 30 thousands; three in the 40 thousands; four in the 50 thousands; one in the 60 thousands, and one in the 70 thousands. By Przemek Boloz, 2011

The Levites (Numbers 1:52-54; 3:39) 52 The children of Israel shall pitch their tents, everyone by his own camp, everyone by his own standard, according to their armies; 53 but the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the Testimony, that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the children of Israel; and the Levites shall keep charge of the tabernacle of the Testimony.” 54 Thus the children of Israel did; according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so they did. 39 The total number of Levites counted at the LORD’s command by Moses and Aaron according to their clans, including every male a month old or more, was 22,000. By Przemek Boloz, 2011

The tabernacle: 100x50 cubits (A "cubit" is an ancient Egyptian unit of measurement equating to 18 inches. Thus, 100 cubits = 150 feet = meters.) Exodus 27:9 9 “You shall also make the court of the tabernacle. For the south side there shall be hangings for the court made of fine woven linen, one hundred cubits long for one side. Exodus 27:12 12 “And along the width of the court on the west side shall be hangings of fifty cubits, with their ten pillars and their ten sockets. By Przemek Boloz, 2011

Numbers 3:38 38 Moreover those who were to camp before the tabernacle on the east, before the tabernacle of meeting, were Moses, Aaron, and his sons, keeping charge of the sanctuary, to meet the needs of the children of Israel; but the outsider who came near was to be put to death. By Przemek Boloz, 2011

Numbers The camp of Dan, consisting of the tribes of Dan (62,700), Asher (41,500), and Naphtali (53,400), a total of 157,600 men, camped to the north (Num. 2:25-31) 33 From Merari came the family of the Mahlites and the family of the Mushites; these were the families of Merari. 34 And those who were numbered, according to the number of all the males from a month old and above, were 6, The leader of the fathers’ house of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail. Cleanliness of the Campsite Deuteronomy “Also you shall have a place outside the camp, where you may go out; 13 and you shall have an implement among your equipment, and when you sit down outside, you shall dig with it and turn and cover your refuse. 14 For the LORD your God walks in the midst of your camp, to deliver you and give your enemies over to you; therefore your camp shall be holy, that He may see no unclean thing among you, and turn away from you. By Przemek Boloz, 2011

Cleanliness of the Campsite Deuteronomy 23 English Standard Version Anglicised 12 “You shall have a place outside the camp, and you shall go out to it. 13 And you shall have a trowel with your tools, and when you sit down outside, you shall dig a hole with it and turn back and cover up your excrement. 14 Because the LORD your God walks in the midst of your camp, to deliver you and to give up your enemies before you, therefore your camp must be holy, so that he may not see anything indecent among you and turn away from you. Through which gate Jesus entered Jerusalem, riding on a colt of a donkey? By Przemek Boloz, 2011

East Gate is shut Ezekiel 46:12 12 “Now when the prince makes a voluntary burnt offering or voluntary peace offering to the LORD, the gate that faces toward the east shall then be opened for him; and he shall prepare his burnt offering and his peace offerings as he did on the Sabbath day. Then he shall go out, and after he goes out the gate shall be shut. Ezekiel 44:1,2 1 Then He brought me back to the outer gate of the sanctuary which faces toward the east, but it was shut. 2 And the LORD said to me, “This gate shall be shut; it shall not be opened, and no man shall enter by it, because the LORD God of Israel has entered by it; therefore it shall be shut. Jerusalem, Eastern Gate (also known as: Golden Gate, Beautiful Gate, Gate of Mercy, Gate of Eternal Life) By Przemek Boloz, 2011

Jerusalem, Eastern gate By Przemek Boloz, 2011

When was the gate sealed? In Jewish tradition, this is the gate through which the Messiah will enter Jerusalem. Ottoman Sultan Suleiman I sealed off the Golden Gate in 1541 to prevent the Messiah's entrance. The Muslims also built a cemetery in front of the gate, in the belief that the precursor to the Messiah, Elijah, would not be able to pass through the Golden Gate and thus the Messiah would not come. This belief was based upon two premises. First, according to Islamic teaching Elijah is a descendant of Aaron which makes him a priest. Secondly, that Jewish priests are not permitted to enter a cemetery. This second premise is not wholly correct because a priest is permitted to enter a cemetery in which primarily non-Jews are buried such as the one outside the Golden Gate. (source: Wikipedia) By Przemek Boloz, 2011

Attempt to enter through the Eastern Gate On June 7th, 1967 during the Six Day War, the Israeli paratroopers broke through the Lion’s Gate to return the old city of Jerusalem to Jewish control for the first time in 1,897 years. It had been suggested by an Israeli commando that they blow open the sealed East Gate because it would catch the Jordanian defenders off guard. But the leader of the group, an Orthodox Jew, had vehemently protested the idea, stating that "the Eastern Gate can be opened only when the Messiah comes.” By Przemek Boloz, 2011
