Great Britain England, Scotland and Wales

A Short History of Great Britain People have lived in Britain since the Old Stone Age Celtic people are the ancestors of many people in Highland Scotland, Wales, Cornwall and Ireland. The Celts often had women as their leaders. The most famous female Celtic leader was Boadicea.

Celtic Tribes throughout Europe

The Romans occupied most of England and Wales in AD 43, but not Scotland. The Romans were afraid of the Scots. Therefore they built a wall along the Scottish border. It was named Hadrian’s wall.

Hadrian’s Wall Hadrian’s Wall is an important relic of Roman Britain.

The Angles and the Saxons The Romans stayed in Britain for a long time, until AD 409. When they left new people attacked Britain. They were the Angels and the Saxons.

Where did they come from? The Celts could not fight the Angles and the Saxons, so they fled to Wales, Scotland and Cornwall.

The Normans The last group of people to invade Britain was the Normans. They were descendants of Viking settlers in northern France.

The Vikings were people who lived in Denmark, Sweden and Norway over a thousand years ago.

The Vikings were great seafarers who attacked cities and towns all over Europe. It was hard to find good farmland. Many young men sailed out to see what they could find. Often they raided what they came across.
