Laboratory Safety Issues Knowing the risks associated with each lab. Choosing the correct safety equipment and practices based on the lab. Knowing where the safety equipment is. Knowing the symbols associated with common lab equipment.

Safety Contracts Safety contract are a non- negotiable! If you do not turn a signed contract you will NOT be able to participate in any lab activities.

Safety Equipment If a lab requires a specific piece of safety equipment it must be worn for the whole lab!

Personal Attire Issues Tie back long hair and tuck into collar. Wear closed toes shoes Confine loose clothing Remove jewelry that may come in contact with lab materials

SAFETY SYMBOLS

Safety Foldable Cut out your foldable according to the teacher’s directions. Glue the spine of your foldable into your notebook leaving the flaps so you can write underneath it on your notebook. (See teacher example.)

Radioactivity For sources defined as dangerous sources capable of death or serious injury. Examples: –food irradiators –radio active elements –machines for cancer treatment –machines that use radioactive materials inside of them

Flammable A source that easily set on fire; combustible. Examples: –Paper –Alcohol –Hydrogen gas

Corrosive A corrosive material is a highly reactive substance that causes obvious damage to living tissue. Examples: –Acids –Bases

Toxic Having to do with poison or something harmful to the body. Examples: –Bleach –Drain Cleaner –Aquarium chemicals

Eyewash Station Eyes must be held open while flushing Eyes must be flushed for at least 15 minutes. Teacher must be notified if eye wash is used!

First Aid Kit The first aid kit is NOT to be used for non-lab injuries! –Example: Blisters caused by shoes, shaving cuts etc. Teacher must be notified if first aid kit is opened!

Fire Blanket The fire blanket is to be used if someone's clothing catches fire. You wrap the blanket around to smother the flames. DO NOT flap the person with the blanket Teacher must be notified!

Eye Protection These icons in a lab indicate eye protection must be worn. Do not remove eye protection until the lab is finished and the materials are put away.
