F AITH, H OPE AND L OVE The 3 Theological Virtues

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS ON A SEPARATE SHEET OF PAPER Provide a definition for the word love. A willingness to do what’s best for the other person How important is love? What is one way to measure love?

LOVE Read 1 Corinthians 13 Underline any words or phrases that stand out to you What is the main message?

W HAT IS A VIRTUE ? As vice is a bad habit, so virtue is a good habit. A virtue is an habitual and firm disposition to do good. It allows the person not only to perform good acts, but to give the best of themselves. The virtuous person tends toward the good with all his sensory and spiritual powers; he pursues the good and chooses it in concrete actions. Virtues and vices form a person’s character.

3 T HEOLOGICAL V IRTUES They are supernatural for they are: A) Revealed by God and known by faith B) Infused by God into the souls of the faithful C) Their purpose is our participation in the divine nature They are the foundation of Christian moral activity. Theology= the study of God, therefore the 3 theological virtues are about God.

They are called “theological” because they have God as their object. “Faith, hope and love” mean: FAITH IN GOD HOPE IN GOD LOVE OF GOD AND OF NEIGHBOR FOR GOD’S SAKE

FAITHFAITH The virtue by which we believe in God and all he has said and revealed to us. Love of God. “The believer seeks to know God and to do God’s will.” Example:

VIDEO SUMMARY-FROM KORN TO JESUS

HOPEHOPE The virtue by which we desire the kingdom of heaven and eternal life as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ’s promises and relying not on our own strength, but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit Hope is the strongest source of fortitude. If you trust God’s promises of the incomparable happiness of Heaven, you can give up any earthly good or endure any earthly deprivation of that.

Love of self Example:

VIDEO SUMMARY-GARVIN’S STORY

LOVELOVE The greatest of all the virtues Love of others “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” By charity (love) we love God above all things and our neighbor as ourselves for love of God. Charity, the form of all the virtues, “binds everything together in perfect harmony.” A WILLINGNESS TO WHAT IS BEST FOR THE OTHER- SACRIFICIAL, UNSELFISH Example:

OUR MISSION STATEMENT Every organization has a mission, a purpose, a reason for being. A meaningful mission can act as a moral compass. It can help you make decisions aligning with your values and goals. The mission statement at Holy Trinity Academy..is based on the 3 theological virtues: Faith, hope and Love.

P ERSONAL M ISSION S TATEMENT It should explain why you exist and what your purpose is. 1. Describe what you will do. My purpose is to… 2. Explain how you will do it Take a moment to think of/list the core values that are important to you.

PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT ASSIGNMENT As a students of Holy Trinity Academy, you are asked to reflect on how you can apply the 3 theological virtues to your life. For each of the 3 theological virtues: a) Provide a definition for each virtue (3 marks) and a scriptural verse (NRSV) for each (3 marks) b) Provide an example of how you could “live out” each virtue (3 marks) c) Write a personal mission statement (2 marks)
