But we urge you, brethren, that you increase more and more; 11 that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you, 12 that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and that you may lack nothing.”

THINGS THAT HINDER SPIRITUAL GROWTH  EVIL  1 PET. 2:1-2 - “Therefore, laying aside all malice, all guile, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, 2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby”

THINGS THAT HINDER SPIRITUAL GROWTH  DULLNESS OF HEARING  HEB. 5: “though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. 9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, 10 called by God as High Priest "according to the order of Melchizedek," 11 of whom we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.”

THINGS THAT HINDER SPIRITUAL GROWTH  YOUTHFUL LUSTS  2 TIM. 2:22 - “Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”

THINGS THAT HINDER SPIRITUAL GROWTH  THE LOVE OF MONEY  1 TIM. 6:10 - “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

THINGS THAT PROMOTE SPIRITUAL GROWTH  PROPER SPIRITUAL APPETITE  1 PET. 2:2 - “as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby”

THINGS THAT PROMOTE SPIRITUAL GROWTH  PROPER EXERCISE  HEB. 5:14 – “But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”  1 TIM. 4:7-8 - “But reject profane and old wives' fables, and exercise yourself toward godliness. 8 For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.”

THINGS THAT PROMOTE SPIRITUAL GROWTH  HEEDING WHAT WE HEAR  HEB. 2:1-3 - “Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. 2 For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him”

THINGS THAT PROMOTE SPIRITUAL GROWTH  DILIGENCE AND ACTIVE SERVICE  1 TIM. 4: “Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. 14 Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. 15 Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. 16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.”

THINGS THAT PROMOTE SPIRITUAL GROWTH  PRAYER AND COMMUNION WITH THE LORD  PHIL. 4:5-7 - “Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. 6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

THINGS THAT PROMOTE SPIRITUAL GROWTH  PRAYER AND COMMUNION WITH THE LORD  PHIL. 4:5-7  JAMES 1:2-6 - “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.”

THINGS THAT PROMOTE SPIRITUAL GROWTH  PRAYER AND COMMUNION WITH THE LORD  PHIL. 4:5-7  JAMES 1:2-6  HEB. 4: “Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

CONCLUSION  ARE WE ALLOWING THINGS TO HINDER OUR SPIRITUAL GROWTH?  WILL WE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE OPPORTUNITY WE WILL HAVE TO GROW AS CHRISTIANS BY ATTENDING EVERY SERVICE OF OUR UPCOMING GOSPEL MEETING?
