AP Statistics

As a society we want to have some control over –reducing rates of cancer, heart attack, diabetes and other diseases… –Determining public education strategies to reduce the incidence of HIV As intelligent and curious beings we want to understand things like –Psychic abilities – are they real? –Are left-handed people better at mathematics? As social and curious beings we want to know about other people –Who are they planning to vote for at the next election? –What TV programs are they watching?

AP Statistics Who should take this course? –Anyone who has an interest in learning about a very different side of mathematics –Anyone who is entering a field in the social sciences (psychology, political science, anthropology, etc) or in any research-based field (biomedical sciences) Prerequisites? –Successful completion of three years of mathematics All students taking an AP course must sit for the AP exam in May.

AP Calculus

Who should take this course? –Anyone interested in a career in mathematics, computer science, engineering or the “hard” sciences (biology, chemistry, etc.) –Anyone interested in a business degree (there are college courses just for “Business Calculus”) Prerequisites? –90 or higher in Math 4 / 4H –Juniors currently in Math 3H may qualify – see Mr. Watson for details All students taking an AP course must sit for the AP exam in May.

AP Calculus What will you learn? –The math behind sticking a thermometer in a murder victim’s liver –How to find the volume of oddly-shaped objects –The relationships between distance, velocity, and acceleration Fun stuff we do? –Build models out of food –Sing “calculus carols”
