The new technology for watertight construction joints

SikaSwell S-2 is a new generation of a gun grade waterstop ...

...that extruded with a simple gun between hardened and fresh concrete...

... expands its volume in contact with water ! Creating a counterpressure that stops the water flow !

Where to use SikaSwell S-2 ? Construction joints (without movement) in : Foundations Tunnels Retaining Walls Pipe penetrations Penetrations of any kind

Cellars and garages Concrete floors and slabs

Precast elements Precast in general Concrete pipes Segments for underground construction

Sealing of construction daywork joints

Sealing between new and existing construction

Sealing between precast concrete pipes and culverts

Bonding of SikaSwell Profiles

Bonding of Sika Injectoflex Hoses

Sealing of cracks Sikadur-31 SikaSwell S-2

Sealing of pipe entries

Sealing between different construction materials

How does SikaSwell S-2 work ? SikaSwell S-2 gradually starts to swell in contact with water and can double its volume in only few days...

How does SikaSwell S-2 work ? ... building up pressure between the surfaces that...

... is slow enough to avoid formation of cracks in fresh concrete when hardening has not yet started and the mechanical properties of concrete are still very low

Swelling is quick enough to stop water in few hours when a completely dry structure is filled with water !

Free expansion is greater than 100% after 7 days water inmersion 200 180 160 140 120 100 Change in volume (%) 80 60 40 20 1 day 3 days 7 days 14 days

Expansion >2 times in 7 days ! 16 mm 16 mm 10 mm 10 mm 10 mm 16 mm Area = 43.30 mm2 Area = 110,85 mm2 Expansion >2 times in 7 days !

No profile SikaSwell S-2 Water flows through the construction joint With SikaSwell S-2 water can pass at the beginning but in a very limited quantity SikaSwell S-2 After expansion the pressure generated by SikaSwell S-2 assures a perfectly watertight joint

Before expansion After expansion When SikaSwell S-2 is in a confined space its expansion results in the filling of all the gaps and cracks around the construction joint and generates a pressure that stops water flow

SikaSwell S-2 is based on a new improved formulation   3000 Excellent workability over a temperature range of + 5oC to + 35oC Low extrusion force at + 5oC SikaSwell S SikaSwell S-2 2500 2000 Extrusion Force (N) 1500 1000 500 5°C 23°C 35°C Temperature (°C)

SikaSwell S-2 is based on a new improved formulation Good sag resistance even at high temperatures Very short cut-off “string” Long shelf life Can be applied on a damp (no standing water) concrete surface   Others SikaSwell S-2

Optimal swelling properties   SikaSwell S-2

SikaSwell S-2 adheres perfectly to irregular substrates SikaSwell S-2 compensates for irregularities of the hardened concrete surface assuring watertightness

SikaSwell S-2 starts to act before swelling Rubber profile Water can pass ! Water doesn’t pass ! Due to their rigidity, profiles cannot compensate irregularities of the concrete. The profile has first to expand to seal these irregularities SikaSwell S-2 addapts to the irregularities during applications and therefore seals much faster !

SikaSwell S-2 can also be applied on vertical surfaces Tixotrophic For easier application cut the nozzle in aprox. 45o angle

Application considerations SikaSwell S-2 has to be applied at the center of the construction element

Application considerations Application in the centre of the concrete section. Minimum cover on both sides : Non Reinforced concrete Reinforced concrete

H2O H2O With a triangular shape Better resistance of fresh profile to wet concrete pouring H2O Lower sensitivity to extrusion irregularities H2O

Packaging Two types of packaging are available Unipac 300 ml cartridge Yellow foil Carton Box containing 20 unipacs x 600 cc 4 triangular nozzles 1 cutter 300 ml cartridge 12 cartridges per carton box 12 nozzles

Triangular nozzle (Unipac) Unipac packaging includes triangular shaped nozzles Cartridges have normal nozzle

Profile dimensioning 20 - 30 15*15*15 30 - 50 20*20*20 The size of the triangle of SikaSwell S-2 depends on the thickness of the concrete section 20 mm 15 mm Concrete Side of triangular thickness section (mm) 20 - 30 15*15*15 30 - 50 20*20*20 Bigger or smaller sections can be used depending on jobsite conditions (surface roughness, size of aggregates etc.))

Size and nozzle sections By Cutting nozzles at different lengths , different sections can be obtained 20 mm 15 mm 25 mm Nozzle size section theoretical (mm) (mm2) length* (m) 15x15x15 98 6.20 20x20x20 173 3.50 Length that can be applied from each unipac * The effective consumption from a 600 ml unipac can be lower than the calculated value depending on the irregularities of the concrete surface !

Cartridge nozzle cutting 15 (20) mm 15 * 15 *15 mm 20 * 20 *20 mm

Size and nozzle sections (cartridges) Nozzle size section theoretical (mm) (mm2) length* (m) 15x15x15 98 3.10 20x20x20 173 1.80 Length that can be applied from each cartridge * The effective consumption from a 300 ml cartridge can be lower than the theoretical value depending on irregularities of the concrete surface !

How to apply SikaSwell S-2 ?

How to apply SikaSwell S-2 ? Very easy !

Apply over the hardened concrete like an ordinary sealant !

Fresh Concrete should not be placed before 2-3 hours Fresh Concrete should not be placed before 2-3 hours. The skin of the sealant is strong enough to protect from being flattered when concrete is poured from a hight of up to 50 cm.

If the hight is > 50 cm the curing time of SikaSwell S-2 should be at least 2 days. During concreting care must be taken that SikaSwell S-2 is completely covered with a dense concrete without any honeycombs. This is best achieved by placing a mortar or fine concrete cover.

Is SikaSwell S-2 affected by rain after application? Even if the product has been exposed to rain for 24 hours there is only a small expansion because of the initially slow reaction with water. Important: there should not be any standing water. In any event, it‘s better to protect SikaSwell S-2 from rain

20 m   Although SikaSwell S-2 has been tested at waterpressures up to 5 bars it’s normally not recommended for water pressures higher than 2 bar because of the limited sealing distance. For higher pressures it can be used as adhesive for the Sika Injectoflex System or in conjunction with other waterproofing measures

SikaSwell S-2 Versatile Easy and fast application Low application cost Suitable for site batched or precast concrete
