TSUNAMI BY: MERRECK LINCOLN

WHAT IS A TSUNAMI? HOW DOES IT FORM? TSUNAMIS ARE NATURAL DISASTERS. THEY ARE HUGE WAVES THAT FORM FROM EITHER EARTHQUAKES OR LANDSLIDES. MOST WAVES ARE CAUSED BY WIND THAT ONLY AFFECTS THE TOP OF THE SEAS. TSUNAMI’S START AT THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN AND WORK UP. THE SHIFTS OF THE PLATES ON THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA CREATE FORCE WHICH MOVES THE WATER FROM THE BOTTOM UP. TSUNAMI’S CARRY LOTS OF FORCE AND ARE DESTRUCTIVE.

WHEN AND WHERE IS A TSUNAMI LIKELY TO HAPPEN? TSUNAMIS CAN HAPPEN ON ANY OCEAN COASTLINE. THEY CAN HAPPEN ANYTIME. THEY ARE UNPREDICTABLE BECAUSE THEY ARE A RESULT OF EARTHQUAKES AND LANDSLIDES.

WHAT KIND OF DAMAGE CAN OCCUR? TSUNAMIS TAKE OUT BIG AREAS OF COASTLINE. THEY CAUSE DEATH AND DESTRUCTION TO THESE AREAS. THE WAVES ARE SO STRONG THEY LEVEL BUILDINGS, WASH AWAY HOMES AND EVERYTHING IN THEIR PATH. THEY LEAVE BEHIND THE SCRAPS OF EVERYTHING THEY KNOCKED DOWN.

SAFETY TIPS ALWAYS HAVE A PLAN FOR SAFETY. PLAN YOUR ESCAPE. ALWAYS HAVE A SAFETY SUPPLY KIT READY. THE SAFETY SUPPLY SHOULD HAVE FIRST AID KIT, BOTTLED WATER, CANNED GOODS, FLASHLIGHT, BATTERY- OPERATED RADIO, PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND A SHEET OF PAPER WITH INSTRUCTIONS.

DID YOU KNOW FACTS? DID YOU KNOW TSUNAMIS ARE FORMED BY LANDSLIDES AND EARTHQUAKES? DID YOU KNOW WAVES 10 TO 20 FEET HIGH CAN BE VERY DESTRUCTIVE? DID YOU KNOW THAT TSUNAMIS ARE VERY POWERFUL WAVES?
