Parenting Styles

…The way that a parent consistently interacts with children Results from everything that influences a person’s ideas about raising children

1. Authoritarian (Brickwall) Characterized by strict discipline imposed by parents Children’s behaviour is managed through rewards & punishment Rules are much more rigid & children are expected to follow them closely

Authoritarian Children raised with this style of parenting may feel rejected by their parents; often have problems both socially & emotionally due to lack of flexibility When physical punishment turns to abuse, children suffer emotional consequences High-risk group for sexual promiscuity, drug abuse & suicide

2. Permissive (Jellyfish) Characterized by few rules & little parental control or guidance of children’s behaviour Children control the family Permissive parents often overindulge their children Guidelines or rules seldom exist

Permissive Children raised with this style of parenting tend to be impulsive, irresponsible, & immature in their behaviour; they have not been taught to consider how their actions affect others High-risk group for sexual promiscuity, drug abuse, & suicide

3. Authoritative (Backbone) Characterized by warmth, support, acceptance, & indirect positive control & guidance of children’s behaviour Guidelines are in place to help children learn to live in society Guidelines are flexible to adapt to different situations

Authoritative Children raised with this style of parenting tend to be better adjusted socially & emotionally, & have a better self-concept Tends to buffer children from sexual promiscuity, drug abuse & suicide through self-empowerment
