Severe Weather: The Human Impact Presented By: Denis Knight Junction Hill School West Plains, Missouri eMINTS Teacher 6 th -8 th Grade Science

Norms for our Classroom Be deeply involved with your work Know what is expected of you Do not waste time or disrupt Be prepared to work but be relaxed and pleasant

Unit Standards for Learning Describe the characteristics of thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hurricanes. Explain the significant changes which cause these dramatic weather phenomena Evaluate weather data to determine the stages of development of these forms of severe weather Synthesize severe weather images to translate the emotional impact of these devastating storms.

Long Term Goals of Unit Be able to use critical thinking skills to determine which choices to make based on the most effective application Analyze information and discriminate between which decisions should be made to seek the most effective methods to use Develop an appreciation for how catastrophic events can impact human society

Management Groups will be divided into 2-3 students. Each group will have access to a computer. We will use the following address, scroll down and click on severe weather This lesson can be divided into four phases

Objective of each Phase Phase 1-2 Phase 1--Gather information by using the interactive websites and PowerPoint presentations Phase 2--Create a Severe Weather Photo Journal over one of the three forms of severe weather. Construct and present a slide show addressing the characteristics of these violent storms.

Phase 3-4 Phase 3--Interpret data of past hurricanes to determine their category. Also, plot the path of a hurricane. Finally, determine the intensity of a storm and decide whether to issue a hurricane warning. Phase 4--Create a multimedia movie about the impact of severe weather on society. Even though the themes of this film will vary for each student group, the steps to create this movie will follow a well formatted structure.

Phase 4—Multimedia Movie Phase 4 requires seven steps. ◦ Step 1-- Developing the Idea (Smart Ideas Activity) ◦ Step 2-- Writing the Script (Microsoft Word Activity) ◦ Step 3-- Gather Images (Create folder for Images) ◦ Step 4-- Multimedia Effects (Document below script) ◦ Step 5-- Storyboarding (Smart Ideas Activity) ◦ Step 6-- Make the Movie (Microsoft Movie Maker) ◦ Step 7-- Copyright (Credits at end of movie)

Objectives for Today View a student version of a story map and movie created from the story map. Use this story map to create a storyboard. Open existing image folder and determine which images will be used to complete storyboard Open Smart Ideas and import images to represent “your” version of the student version of the story map. Record the following information for each image: ◦ How or if written text will appear ◦ Narration? (Document what will be spoken) ◦ Transitions? (fading/panning of images) ◦ Music? Sounds? (enhance theme)
