Hearts at Play Field Day SENIOR DEVELOPERS: MASON CLARK JENNA JONES BRADEN JOHNSON JASMYNE POST

Project Summary ♥A field day for elementary schools ♥Letters of intent from NHES and CHES ♥Stations based on risk factors for heart disease: ♥Smoking ♥Nutrition ♥Exercise ♥Requested Funding: $ ♥Goal: Inform students about indiscretions that are proven to increase risk for heart disease

Project Description ♥Objective 1: Hold a field day at local elementary schools to educate students on the risk factors of heart disease ♥Objective 2: Increased knowledge of heart disease in 75% of students tested ♥Objective 3: Increased average test score by at least 25%

Partner Organizations ♥American Heart Assoc. – Curriculum and Poster Providers ♥Dr. Chad Sanders DNP, APRN- Guest Speaker at General Assembly ♥NHES, CHES- Hosting Schools ♥UK- Smoking Awareness Supplies

Heart Disease: Problem? Center for Disease Control: Heart Disease Death Rate in all ages American Heart Association: Leading Causes of Death in Kentucky “Cancer and heart disease are the leading causes of death in Daviess County.” OMHS Community Health Needs Assesment: Section 4.5.1

How Will This Project Help? ▪ Early childhood education = Less heart disease later in life (Fuster, Bridget, et al, 2010) ▪ Games are designed to INTERACT with kids ▪ Involvement = better comprehension

Example Station: Run from Cigarettes! ♥Smokers have a 2 to 4 times higher chance of having heart disease (WebMd, 2014) ♥70,000 nonsmokers die each year from heart disease brought on by second hand smoke! (WebMd 2014) Half of the children will wear masks as they run the race and the other half will not and this will simulate the complications that smoking causes.

Example Station: Ring in the Water ♥ Many risk factors to Heart Disease (such as blood viscosity, plasma viscosity, and blood fibrinogen levels) are elevated by dehydration (Jaqueline Chan, 2001) Students will gather around a square of water bottles and be handed four plastic rings and throw them at the water bottles to try and ring the water bottles.

Timeline March Apply for funding Separate class into groups Finalize date with schools Begin agenda planning April Receive funding Purchase supplies Groups will work separately Get tests/materials printed Receive supplies from sponsors

Outcomes and Evaluations ♥Post and Pre Tests will be delivered to schools ♥Tests consist of four true and false questions ♥Students will evaluate scores to pre and post tests and compare the averages

Student Roles ♥Project developers will oversee the event ♥Man Stations ♥Grade and evaluate test results ♥Speak at Assembly ♥Create Test

Conclusion ♥We will hold a field day at two local elementary schools to educate them on the risks of heart disease. ♥Our goal is to have 75% of students tested to show improvement on post tests. ♥Required Funds: $282.92

It’s never too early to start learning about heart health, but it might be too late.
