Medical Transcription III MR270 Dr. Kathleen A. Bishop, Instructor Week 1

Welcome to Week 1 Welcome from Dr. B Self-introductions: My hopes and expectations for this course are…. I am very interested in learning…

Be sure that you have your textbook and all of your resource books handy. Stedman’s Advanced Medical Transcription Skill Builders (2008) The Book of style for Medical Transcription 3 rd Ed. AHDI Medical Dictionary of your choice. As usual, this is an open book study so speed is not important, but accuracy is. Enjoy the hour!

Cardiology

A & P of the Heart What is this picture displaying?

Answer Key Pacemaker placed beneath skin in pectoral region.

A & P of the Heart Cont. What is this a picture of? Define the word: Waveform

Answer Key Figure 5. Normal arterial waveform Waveform: The representation of a wave on a graph (e.g., an arterial pressure or displacement wave; or the pacemaker pulse as demonstrated on an oscilloscope under a specified load).

A & P of the Heart Cont. Posterior Identify the valves of the heart (shown in the picture to the left) during diastole. 1. ______________ 2. ______________ 3. ______________ 4. ______________ 5. ______________ 6. ______________ 7. ______________ 8. ______________ 9. ______________

Answer Key 1.Chordae tendineae 2.Left AV valve open 3.Aortic valve closed 4.Coronary artery 5.Pulmonary valve closed 6.Cusps of pulmonary valve 7.Coronary artery 8.Cusps of aortic valve 9.Right AV valve open

A & P of the Heart Cont. Identify the coronary arteries of the heart in the picture to the left. 1. _________________ 2. _________________ 3. _________________ 4. _________________ 5. _________________

Answer Key 1.Left coronary artery (LCA) 2.Left circumflex coronary artery 3.Left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) 4.Posterior descending coronary artery (PDA) 5.Right coronary artery (RCA)

Vocabulary: Cardiology Combine the common prefixes, suffixes and combing forms to create words that you will come across when transcribing cardiology reports. You may use some of the parts more then once. arteri/o- brady- cardi/o dys echo- -grade -gram -plegia -pnea retro-

Answer Key Vocabulary You may have found some additional words but here are the ones I created: retrograde arteriogram bradycardia dyspnea echocardiogram cardioplegia

Book of Style Chpt. 14 pgs There are 4 sounds and 4 components assessed on auscultation of the heart what are they and how are they transcribed?

Answer Key First heart sound (S1 can be subscript as well) Second heart sound (S2) Third heart sound (S3) Fourth heart sound (S4) Aortic valve component (A2) Mitral valve component (M1 Pulmonic valve component (P2) Tricuspid valve component (T1)

Book of Style Chpt. 14 Cont. Murmurs are graded from soft to loud how are they transcribed? There is a virgule/slash placed between the murmur grade and the scale. How would you transcribe this phrase if the patient had a grade 2 murmur on a scale of 6?

Answer Key grade 1 barely audible, must strain to hear grade 2 quiet, but clearly audible grade 3 moderately loud grade 4 loud grade 5 very loud; audible with stethoscope partly off the chest grade 6 so loud that it can be heard with stethoscope just above chest wall.

Answer Key 2/6 It is not unusual for dictators to use “out of” or “over” to express these grades, so listen for both.

Diagnostic Testing and Procedures List the wide variety of radiologic and diagnostic procedures associated with the management of cardiovascular diseases.

Answer Key Electrocardiography Vector cardiography Electrophysiologic studies Ultrasound Nuclear cardiology Radiology Catheterization Pulmonary function testing

Diagnostic Testing and Procedures Cont. Which test uses Roman numerals for their designations and not Arabic numerals?

Answer Key Standard bipolar leads in and ECG/EKG Lead I Lead II Lead III

Good Night All… Thanks for joining me tonight I hope you learned something new. Don’t forget to complete all required assignments for this unit on time. Keep up the great work--you’re near graduation! See you same time—same place next week! Dr. B
