What is Eta Kappa Nu (HKN)? Originally founded in 1904 at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as Eta Kappa Nu (HKN) Inducted both student and professional members (as either member or eminent member) Had Student and Alumni Chapters Published The Bridge magazine 2/8/20142

What is IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu (IEEE-HKN)? First student honor society within IEEE Recognizes excellence among peers Recognizes students who excel academically or as leaders among their peers Formed on 1 September 2010 following a merger between IEEE and Eta Kappa Nu Association (HKN) Dedicated to encouraging and recognizing excellence in the IEEE-designated fields of interest Membership consists of students, alumni, and other professionals who have demonstrated exceptional academic and professional accomplishments 2/8/20143

IEEE-HKN Induction Categories IEEE-HKN Member –May be inducted as a member if you meet the qualifications and are one of the following: undergraduate student, graduate student, faculty member or professional –Only by invitation –For induction requirements go to: IEEE-HKN Eminent Member –May be inducted as an eminent member if you meet the qualifications and are one of the following: faculty member or professional –For qualification requirements and nomination process information go to: 2/8/20145

IEEE-HKN CHAPTERS Who is qualified for membership? –Students pursuing courses leading to a first professional degree in an IEEE-designated field of interest and who have completed At least one-third of the degree requirements and who have a cumulative scholastic rank in the upper fifth of their class One-half of the degree requirements and who have a cumulative scholastic rank in the upper quarter of their class Three-fourths of their degree requirements and have a cumulative scholastic rank in the upper third of their class 2/8/20146

(contd) –Graduate Students who have graduated with a first professional degree from a school of recognized standing and possess the same scholastic and other qualifications required for undergraduate candidates –Faculty members whose principal areas of professional interests fall within the IEEE-designated fields of interest –Professionals who have done meritorious work in an area that falls within one of the IEEE-designated fields of interest 2/8/20147

IEEE-HKN Costs & Benefits at Induction What does it cost to be inducted into IEEE-HKN? –Effective 1 January 2012, USD –Induction for life in IEEE-HKN What do I receive as an inductee to IEEE- HKN? –Free 1-year membership into IEEE of newly inducted Students and Graduate Students only –2-year subscription to THE BRIDGE publication 2/8/20149

What does an IEEE-HKN Student Chapter do? Induct qualified students, professionals and faculty into their Student Chapter as IEEE-HKN members Engage in a large variety of service activities, including tutoring, technical competitions, community outreach, and outreach to high schools Organize scholarly activities Provide assistance to students through tutoring and organizing help sessions on different subjects Participate in social outreach activities to the community Organize activities for pre-university students on engineering and science (e.g., science fairs) 2/8/201410

IEEE-HKN Chapters and IEEE Student Branches - Basics There can be several models for Chapter Establishment and Operation with relation to Student Branches can be accommodated –Independent model – separate from, and operate independently of, one another –Collaborative model – separate from, but operate collaboratively, on projects/activities –Integrated model – sub-unit of Student Branch with individuals holding similar officer positions, including Faculty Advisor and Student Branch Counselor –Others (to be determined) 2/8/201411

Forming a Chapter of IEEE-HKN? Chapters may be established at: –Any college or university that awards the Bachelor of Engineering degree, Bachelor of Science degree, –Or an equivalent degree within an IEEE-designated field of interest –Where the school meets the requirements of a recognized regional or professional accrediting agency Determination of eligibility of a school to establish a Chapter shall be made by the IEEE-HKN Board of Governors in consultation with: –The pertinent accreditation agencies, –Educational organizations, and –IEEE organizational units 2/8/201414

IEEE-HKN CHAPTERS Process for forming an IEEE-HKN Chapter is on the IEEE-HKN Website –letter from a minimum of at least 8 eligible students wishing to establish the chapter and become its charter members –endorsement letter from the university officials to establish the chapter and support its formation on campus –letter from university officials stating the school met requirements of a recognized regional or professional accrediting agency –proposed operations manual for the new chapter 2/8/201415
