doc.: IEEE /1672 STA Provided Location November 2006 Donghee Shim, et alSlide 2 Abstract This presentation provides a mechanism for a STA to provide its location to the network if known location is available. No change on currently defined architectures and frames for location services support is required. No specific location determination mechanism is defined or required. At the end of the presentation, there will be a motion to determine next steps.

doc.: IEEE /1672 STA Provided Location November 2006 Donghee Shim, et alSlide 3 Current Location Proposal Presence Configuration Procedure –Periodic exchange of frames for the purpose of collecting the necessary data to determine location by setting Presence Parameter information in Beacon, Probe Response or Presence Configuration Request (1)A STA periodically transmits Presence Request frame (2)AP collects data to position the STA –Establishing a location service that periodically provides location estimation by setting Presence Parameter information in Beacon, Probe Response or Presence Configuration Request (1) AP periodically transmits Presence Response frame to provide location data to the STA Presence Request Procedure –Advertise STA its Presence –Request STA its own location to the AP –Request AP location –Provide data to AP for the purpose of locating the STA Presence Response Procedure –The Presence Response frame, Beacon and Probe Response frames provide presence reporting parameters to the STA by AP –A Presence Response frame may be sent to provide location information to a STA or exchange frames for location calculating purposes

doc.: IEEE /1672 STA Provided Location November 2006 Donghee Shim, et alSlide 4 Current Location Proposal – cont Based on the normative texts in v draft, following can be deduced –STA-assisted positioning is supported such that AP collects measurement data provided by the STA and calculates location of STA –Network-assisted positioning can be also supported such that STA can calculate its location based on measurement of time of arrival, however, it is not explicitly specified (timing measurement in the Probe Response message implicitly implies this capability) –STA-based positioning seems to be not supported STA has no capability to announce its location to the network even if STA can calculates its location based on time of arrival (implicitly it can be supported) STA could support STA-based positioning such as stand-alone GPS or other possible STA-based positioning mechanisms Current Presence Request frame can carry only Location Descriptor Current Probe Request frame does not carry Presence Parameters

doc.: IEEE /1672 STA Provided Location November 2006 Donghee Shim, et alSlide 5 Current Location Proposal – cont Current Location Proposal –Current solution such that location descriptor in the Presence Request frame is not enough to provide STAs location to the network –No presence parameters in the Probe Response message

doc.: IEEE /1672 STA Provided Location November 2006 Donghee Shim, et alSlide 6 Thoughts STA can provide its own location to the network –If already measured location is available (1) From Stand-alone GPS measurements (2) From other available sources such as GSM/W-CDMA/CDMA based measurements if the handset supports multiple access technologies (WLAN and W-CDMA and so on) or Interworking WLAN (in 3GPP and 3GPP2) Addition of Presence parameters with location descriptor, location data, location source id in the Presence Request frame can be considered Addition of location data, location source id in the existing Presence parameters in the Probe Request frame can be considered No change in the current working procedures and architecture for location services is required

doc.: IEEE /1672 STA Provided Location November 2006 Donghee Shim, et alSlide 7 STA Provided Location STA can provide its location STA AP Probe Request (Presence Parameters Element (Location Descriptor, Location data, Location ID)) Probe Response (Presence Parameters Element or ACK of reception of location) Location Descriptor and Location Data fields can be included in Presence Parameters Element or any ACK of reception of Location data from STA can be included Location Data is included in the Presence Parameters Element

doc.: IEEE /1672 STA Provided Location November 2006 Donghee Shim, et alSlide 8 STA Provided Location – cont STA can provide its location STA AP Probe Response (Presence Parameters Element or ACK of reception of location) Presence Request (Presence Parameters Element (Location Descriptor, Location data, Location ID)) Location Data is included in the Presence Parameters Element Location Descriptor and Location Data fields can be included in Presence Parameters Element or any ACK of reception of Location data from STA can be included

doc.: IEEE /1672 STA Provided Location November 2006 Donghee Shim, et alSlide 9 Proposal : STA Provided Location Capability of STA to announce its location to the Network –Provides available location to the network in the Presence Request frame or Probe Request frame –With Presence Parameters –With Location Descriptor, Location Data, Location Source
