1 Welcome to HHS

2 Haverford High School Course Selection Night For current 9 th, 10 th, and 11 th grade students February 9, 2012

3 Student Support Counselors: Through Advisory assignments, counselors follow students for four years. Administrators: The grade-level principal follows the students. Advisors: Homeroom advisors follow the students.

4 Levels For the school year, Levels 1 (Honors and AP), 2 (College Prep), and 3 (Career Track) will be offered in Math, Science, English, and Social Studies. Levels will be determined by parent/student selection, with teacher recommendations.

5 Scheduling Procedure Access course requesting online –Can be done from home or in the school library –Access is through the Parent/Student portal of PowerSchool –Requests will be verified in advisories, compared with course selection sheet –Courses are balanced based upon selection; students do not choose which semester the course falls in

6 New Courses Advanced Marketing- BU credit, one quarter course, Academic – 2nd level. Open to grades 9 through 12. Prerequisites: Marketing 1. Computer Aided Drafting and Design Course (CAD): Invention and 3D Animation- TE credit, one semester course. Open to all grades 9 through 12. AP World History- SS credit, year-long course. Recommended for 10th grade honors students interested in an AP course. AP United States History- SS credit, one semester course. Recommended for 11th grade honors students interested in an AP course. The Art Department has proposed several changes which can be found in the Fine Arts Department Course List. Students who do extremely well in Honors science classes and are independently motivated may petition their counselor and teacher for approval to take the AP version of a science course instead of the first level course.

7 English/Social Studies English 10/World Cultures –Choose the same level of each course as classes will integrate content, materials, and assessments American History/American Literature ~ 11th Grade –Choose the appropriate level of each course. American Government ~ 12th Grade –A graduation requirement –The AP U.S. Gov’t and Politics section may be taken to fulfill this requirement

8 Math Requirements REQUIRED CORE MATH COURSES: All students must complete 4 math courses to fulfill graduation requirements. These courses will be part of the CPM sequence, which will be outlined on the next slide.

10 REQUIRED CORE SCIENCE COURSES: –All students must successfully complete the following courses to meet the minimum graduation requirements. –Science Sequence: Inquiry Into the Physical Setting (IPS) Chemistry Biology –Beginning with the class of 2015 (current 9 th graders) students must complete an additional science course for graduation. 12 Lab Classes in Reading will be available for 10 th, 11 th,and 12 th grade students to assist them in reaching high expectations. Students may be placed in these classes based upon standardized test scores, or students may elect them in place of, or in addition to, itinerant support. Math lab will be available for students on an as needed basis. Students can utilize the math lab during support class, study hall, or their scheduled math classes. Lab Classes

13 Electives The Course Selection Guide is filled with electives in many subject areas. Please check prerequisites before scheduling electives. Requesting an elective does not guarantee that the student will receive the elective.

14 Dual Enrollment/DCCC Who is eligible? Second semester seniors “in good standing” with required courses/graduation credits Students who wish to try out college courses to determine whether or not it is the right path for them, and/or to earn college credits during the last semester of their high school career Students may be responsible for tuition, materials, and fees

15 Dual Enrollment/DCCC Students are approved by DCCC Admissions Office and submit a college application Students undergo placement testing (English, Reading, Mathematics) Students who are considering this option should attempt to determine which courses they would like at DCCC and schedule their high school classes around them. Students cannot schedule classes at DCCC while they are scheduled for classes at Haverford.

16 Delaware County Technical School Option for 11 th and 12 th grade students Blocks 1 and 2 every day at DCTS, and blocks 3 and 4 at HHS Over 15 different courses –Choose Vo-Tech A.M.
