PoDAG 28: Highlights Presentation October 14-15, 2009 Related Tasks

PoDAG 28: Highlights Presentation October 14-15, 2009 Science-Data Liaison Candidate data sets for PoDAG review in the coming year: Submitted requests (Brown, Dirksen, GLIMS) Preview of data sets coming to the UWG for action in coming year (not in priority order)  Kimball MeaSures frozen ground ESDR  Long passive microwave and scatterometry  Long ReaSON data o SSMI global enhanced swath/grid data (10TB) o AMSR-E global enhanced swath/grid (10TB) o NSCAT and QuickSCAT polar EASE grid subsets (1TB) o CReSIS snow/firn product o G-CAP and A-CAP MeaSures products o Robinson/Anderson NH Snowcover CDR o MODICE data set (Armstrong) Discuss status and priority order

PoDAG 28: Highlights Presentation October 14-15, 2009 Engineering related items of interest ECS/EMD (see following slide) NON-EOS/ECS (see following slide) All NSIDC DAAC data are now on rotating disk, either in ECS or non-ECS RAID systems.

PoDAG 28: Highlights Presentation October 14-15, 2009 EOS/ECS Topics ECS/EMD upgrades completed  7.22 install of software complete o Code reduction and simplification  Migration of data from Powderhorn to LTO tape library complete. All 9MY + files have been verified. Powderhorn is off line and is to be removed by end of CY2009 ECHO/WIST  We are now operating with the centralized metadata warehouse at GSFC for access to our data. This system replaces the EDG. Data Pool access is via the data pool web interface or direct FTP access ECS/EMD planned upgrades  7.23 release planned in January 2010 to include additional system monitoring tools and minor software updates.  Most major development deferred while “bridge contract” is in place for Raytheon

PoDAG 28: Highlights Presentation October 14-15, 2009 NON-EOS/ECS Topics Non-ECS system upgrades  Virtual servers operational  RAID capacity increased and migration of data from MAID to RAID is complete  Backup hardware and systems replaced  Off-site backup system for V0 high priority data under development. Completion in December 2009  HVAC upgrade/replacement for ECS computer room in construction design review. (We are exploring energy saving HVAC as replacement.) NSIDC’s Searchlight Development (separate presentation at meeting) .

PoDAG 28: Highlights Presentation October 14-15, 2009 Other Activities NSF data management efforts complimentary to DAAC  NSF Data Net proposal submitted  NSF EAGER proposal funded

PoDAG 28: Highlights Presentation October 14-15, 2009 PoDAG Membership We should increase membership by members  What areas of NASA user community are under represented? o Modeling!  What areas of the broader user community are under represented?  Consider both science and data systems expertise?
