EDU 361 Arts in ECE “Developing a Creative Drama Program” Developing a Creative Movement Program” Session #10

A Creative Drama Program… (M. Mayesky, Text) Creative Drama must relate to children, not please adults by acting out a play. Children need no written lines to memorize or structured behavior patterns to imitate in order to fantasize about their world. One of the best ways for children to express themselves in through creative drama play, because the children are free to express their inner feelings.

T/F? True For young children, dramatic play might involve toys and equipment, or just the power of their imaginations. Give an example of how a child can express his/her feelings about being afraid of the doctor Though role playing with dolls T/F? True For creative dramatic play, children do not need very elaborate equipment to enjoy themselves.

What else can children explore through imitation and make-believe while engaged in dramatic play? – The world around them and develop necessary skills language development and more. T/F? False The use of simple props, costumes, and puppets do not enhance children’s dramatic play. T/F? True Children naturally learn through dramatic play.

T/F? True The three themes of dramatic play of which children progress is: (1) domestic scenes (housekeeping); (2) rescue (emergencies); (3) sudden threat (monsters). What is the best way to stimulate spontaneous drama for young children? Through providing them with and interesting and stimulating environment that is not threatening. What type of materials can teachers use to encourage children’s dramatic play? – Different kits containing props such as cooking, mail center, cleaning, doctor, ect…

State some common types of dramatic play kits. 1) Post Office and Mail Carrier; (2) Firefighter; (3) Cooking; (4) Cleaning; (5) Doctor; (6) Beauty Salon; (7) Grocery Store; and (8) Entertainer. State some guidelines for promoting dramatic play experiences with young children. Suggested experiences and equipment for the Housekeeping/Dramatic Arts Center T/F? True Dramatic play is an important medium for language learning and language fluency. If so why? Because they are experimenting with language and learning how to communicate with each other.

(J. Beatty, text) T/F? True One of the best places for children to express themselves in creative, dramatic play is the housekeeping or home center. If so, why? Because their roles tend to center around home and family From participating in dramatic play, children can learn: –Social Development -Emotional Development –Cognitive Development - Language Development –Physical Development - Creative Development This is because a child’s engagement in dramatic play, they are able to develop new ideas, novel solutions to problems, abstract thinking, creativity, flexibility, the ability to communicate, and the ability to get along better with peers.

T/F? True Children who are able to engage in dramatic play with others learn to be cooperative and flexible. If so, why? Because they are learning the skills necessary to communicate and work well with others though the play situations. T/F? True Children who engage in pretending are able to develop abstract thinking, creativity, flexibility, the ability to communicate, and the ability to get along better with their peers.

How can a teacher set up a generic dramatic play center? Some suggested materials for setting up a generic dramatic play center include – full-length mirror, stove, refrigerator, sink, cooking/eating utensils; table and chairs, tea set, telephone, props for cleaning, bed for doll, etc., rocking chair, empty cans, food boxes; dolls/clothes; puppets, postman hat, a variety of hats, nurse cap, play money, cash register, etc. T/F? True The sequence of social development begins with unoccupied/onlooker behavior, then solitary play, parallel play, and finally cooperative play. An example of how a teacher can utilize dramatic play to promote social development: by setting the stage for children spontaneous pretending through providing them with materials to foster dramatic play.

An example of how a teacher can utilize dramatic play to promote emotional development: Is through coaching them and allowing them time to act out what they have been learning. An example of how a teacher can utilize dramatic play to promote cognitive development: Is though teaching them and placing items in the dramatic play area for them to incorporate in their play if they choose to. An example of how a teacher can utilize dramatic play for language development: Is through giving students the opportunity to experiment with words in a creative way. An example of how a teacher can utilize dramatic play to promote creativity: Is to place a variety of different types of props in the dramatic play center for the students to use.

T/F? True If dramatic play disintegrates or gets out of hand, a teacher should: (1) redirect the play; (2) extend the play; (3) take roles in the play themselves; and/or (4) stop the play and talk to the children about caring. (G. Morrison, text) Dramatic play involves two types of play: sociodramatic and fantasy. Define sociodramatic play. Is where children are able to act like an adult during dramatic play and express themselves in different roles. Define fantasy play. Fantasy play is where the children are able to play roles that would not be plausible in real life.

A Creative Movement Program… (R. Pica, text) T/F? True Young children learn best by doing– through play, experimentation, exploration, and discovery. T/F? True The term “the whole child” means that children come as thinking, feeling, moving human beings who learn through their senses. T/F? True Body image influences a child’s emotional health, learning ability, and intellectual performance.

T/F? True Children think better when their daily routines include physical activity. T/F? True Movement can activate the neural wiring throughout the body. T/F? True Current research shows that body/space awareness transfers to paper/space awareness. Because they had practice understanding how to move in a certain space.

T/F? True Children who have trouble finding personal space or who line up too closely to another person, usually write their letters in a similar fashion. T/F? True The omission of gross motor instruction may be devastating to children who are predominantly kinesthetic learners. T/F? True When both hemispheres of the brain are activated in a balanced way, cognitive functioning is heightened and learning becomes easier. Tip: Playing “opposite” games with children involves body movements that help children learn: up/down; front/behind.
