Objectives What is abduction? Explain 3 ways child abduction can happen Explain 3 ways to prevent child abduction from happening Know at least 3 statistics of child abduction

Ways Child Abduction Can Happen Strangers In cars, at the mall, grocery store, play grounds, school grounds Family Members At home, school, vacation Close Friends At a friend’s house, at the child’s house

What Every Child Should Know Child abduction is rare You have the right to say “NO!” Don’t be alone if you think someone is following you Grown-ups should not ask children for help - directions, gifts, threats, emergencies, pretend authority figures You do not have to keep an Adult’s secret -child molesters depend on the fact that children will keep their secret

What every child should know If you are threatened or grabbed shout, “HELP!” or “call 911” Never open the door to strangers Watch out for your friends Don’t be afraid to ask a police officer security guard, or employee for help.

What we all must do Help watch out for others If you think you know someone involved in molesting or abducting children, call the police Don’t be afraid to call the police about suspicious looking situations - molesters and abductors usually study their victims before they strike Your instinct can save another person

Statistics More than 350,000 family abductions occur in the US each year Mothers flee with children 54% of the time, fathers 46% Children are sexually abused in 1% of the cases Children have experienced physical abuse or harm 8% of the cases Children have experienced serious mental harm 16% of the cases

What would you do if… A stranger is following you? You are being taken against your will? You are being pulled to a car? An adult wants you to keep an inappropriate secret? You are being touched inappropriately by a family friend that your parents trust Your parents are getting divorced and your mother takes you away saying you will never see your family or friends ever again?
