LEARNING TARGETS/CFS DETERMINE WHEN TO USE DIFFERENT RESUME STYLES CREATE AN EFFECTIVE RESUME COMPLETE A SAMPLE JOB APPLICATION Résumés and Job Applications

Resumes A résumé  Highlights your best qualities  Always provides a professional and accurate picture of you  Outlines relevant job experiences, skills, accomplishments, and academic credentials  Provides an opportunity for self promotion  Brief, to the point, formatted for easy reading  Error free  No more than two pages

The two most common résumés The Chronological Résumé  Lists all your work experience and educational history in order by date  Best used when you are entering the job market for the first time, or when you are changing fields. The Functional Résumé  Organizes your experience according to specific skills of functions  Typically used if you are changing careers or reentering the workforce after a period of absence.

Organization of your résumé 1. Identification 2. Address 3. Telephone Numbers 4. Address (keep professional) 5. Professional Objective- this is optional, usually one or two sentences long. It reflects your short and long term career goals. 6. Education 7. Work and military experience 8. International experience 9. Awards 10. Community Service/Volunteerism

Electronic Resumes Key words are nouns that describe skills and experience sought by employer Computer selects and ranks number of key words top matches are read by human screener to determine whether or not interview will be scheduled
