Short report from Germany Regarding Microsoft Resource Localization Toolkit and other things

MVP-Summit  Thank you for inviting me!  It is a great event! –even if I did not see many of you at the MVP party…  And it is a great learning experience!  Let me keep you updated regarding localization of Visual FoxPro 8.0 …

Short overview  German FoxPro User Group – dFPUG  Incorporated and personally owned  Necessary to run German Conference –this year 11th time w. maybe large binder again  Publishes loose-leaf magazine FoxX Professional with 200 pages A4 quarterly  Run website, SharePoint PortalServer, eNewsletter, Forum/Newsgroup, Wiki  New owner of framework Visual Extend

Localization started with a book  Not to be compared with the numbers of copies Hentzenwerke had in former times or still expects nowadays  Electronic version and additional material in Portal Server with named accounts (in- cluding subscriptions)

Additional titles in production

Resource Localization Toolkit  Contract with Microsoft via Ken Levy! –Microsoft legal needed time, but Ken insisted …  German, French, Czech GUI from Eugen Wirsing with help from Christof Lange and Igor Vit  German helpfile started September and will be done this month, timed beta download  Spanish helpfile available for free due to 60 helping hand doing hours – ask Alex …  German version is not for free – it was cheap compared to MS but we‘ll loose money on it

Localization of VFP 9.0  Userinterface will be done again for different languages, maybe our resource files could be used for VFP 9.0 ?  We hoped this to be less additional work as changes from 7.0 to 8.0 were very heavy  Due to format changes it might even be a problem to find all these changes at all …  Starting with reportwriter enduser features

Main problem: Momentum  With VFP 8.0 each step was months away from the next one and always provided a good excuse to postpone update decision  German website, evaluation guide, localized user interface should be in time this time!  Next problem: Budget  Hoped to take over FoxTalk but that did not work, additional revenues needed …

Marketing for next version  combined with conference program we will invite people to a small roadshow on our own to present new reportwriter and VFP 9 to VFP6 & FPW & Xbase-developers  additionaly a set of regional events will be placed to give away „OpenSource“ for Small Business to get clients for members  And maybe we manage to publish at least some articles in magazines
