The University of Salford Introducing The Energy Theme & Energy House Stephen Waterworth Energy Hub Manager University of Salford

Stephen Waterworth Vision & Aims To develop an Energy Theme - acting as a catalyst and promoting world-class excellence through interdisciplinary research, industry- informed teaching and engagement. “ Creating a sustainable future”

Stephen Waterworth Sub-Themes Building on our internationally recognised strengths in teaching, research & innovation and enterprise and engagement the University’s interdisciplinary Energy Theme has been divided into 4 sub themes: - Energy Generation Energy Conversion Demand Reduction and Transport Socio-Economic Issues Resources Renewables Nuclear Materials for Energy Intelligent Control Systems Transport Energy Storage Energy Management Energy Policy Behavior Change Water Waste Management Environmental Issues

Stephen Waterworth The Energy Hub – What is it A physical space - the ‘Energy Hub’ is to be created within Cockcroft Building where interdisciplinary teams of academics researchers students business the community can interact and develop solutions to address the looming global energy crisis.

Stephen Waterworth The Hub 3D Fly Through

Stephen Waterworth Energy House Traditional pre -1920’s style terrace and a half (and the half is important..!) Reclaimed materials Fully Functional Constructed in a fully enclosed environmental chamber with controlled levels of :- Heat (- 3 o C to + 30 o C) Humidity (0% - 80%) Light Rain..! Snow..!

Stephen Waterworth Energy House

Stephen Waterworth Why A Salford Terrace..? Replacement rate <1% Approximately 70% of existing properties will remain in 2050 Energy UseCO 2 Emissions Age of Stock

Stephen Waterworth What we will be able to test This unique facility will allow the University, in collaboration with industry and the community, develop solutions to address the energy crisis (levels of C0 2, rising fuel prices and the need to secure an energy future). Work and collaborations with focus not only on technological solutions but will include the non- technology solutions as well: - Technology Solutions Non - Technology Solutions Insulation White Goods Smart Metering Intelligent Control Systems etc. etc … Perceptions of Colour Product Interaction Consumer Behaviour Consumer Communication etc…

Stephen Waterworth Who can get involved..? The aim is to provide a facility that will be of benefit and available to our local: - Salford City Council Businesses Housing Organisations / Providers Community Organisations and Groups Local Residents Schools and School Children

Stephen Waterworth Example Projects Product development, verification and testing Virtual Thermal Imaging for Tenant Interaction & Communication Human perception of temperature from colour in home environment Use of “physical” energy to operate game consoles Influence of smart meters on consumer behaviour towards energy usage
