Poetry Analysis Essay

Introduction Is the poem and poet mentioned? Is there a clear summary of the poem? Is there a clear thesis statement? Is the thesis the last sentence of the paragraph?

Sample Introduction John Hamm’s poem “The Ballad of Captain Super” tells the story of a superhero who doesn’t have any super powers. Cap watches over the town he has sworn to protect. The hero sees a crisis in the town and remembers what he must do to protect the citizens. When the Captain makes his move he painfully realizes he is unable to fly. Using a mix of metaphors and similes, “The Ballad of Captain Super” shows that what we think can outweigh our physical abilities.

Body Paragraphs Are there at least three body paragraphs?

Body Paragraphs - Connotation Is it clear what type of figurative language is being discussed? Is the meaning of the figurative language explained? Is the importance of the figurative language explained? Is there a direct quote in each paragraph?

Body Paragraph - Attitude Is the author's attitude clearly stated? What type of life experiences could have influenced this poem? Is there a direct quote from the poem? Does the direct quote relate to the author's attitude?

Conclusion Is the thesis statement restated? Is the poem's theme stated? Is the theme explained?

Mechanics Does each paragraph have a topic sentence? Is there a variety of words used? Use third person perspective only! The title of the poem goes in quotation marks every time it is used! The poet and title are capitalized every time they are mentioned!
