Presentation transcript:

Chapter 9.3 Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship Patrick Henry once said… “Let America stretch forth her fair hand toward the people of the old world” In other words… Come to America and help us get this nation to grow!

Now that we are a country… We need Citizens! People can become U.S. citizens in several ways: Birth Citizenship Be born in America Naturalized citizenship Given to anyone who wants to move to America to become a citizen You have to pass a test

Citizenship Test Could you pass the test? Who is the President of the United States? Who is the VP of the United States? Who is the governor of Ohio? Who is the mayor of Cuyahoga Falls? Who is the Congresswoman representing our district?

What if you don’t pass the test? We can deport you! Return you back to your original country Is this an issue today?

Duties of Citizens Being an American comes with responsibilities: Jury duty Voting Protecting the nation in time of danger Helping your community Respecting authority figures

Most important duties: Jury Duty Each citizen is registered to be picked to serve on a jury. How does it work? You get a letter in the mail You show up and serve If you do not, you can be arrested!

Most important duties: Protecting our Country At the age of 18 Male citizens must register for the selective service Better known as the draft In times of war, the government holds a lottery draft. If your birthday is called, you join the military. What if you don’t register? You go to jail!

Most Important Duties: Voting We have a right to pick our leaders in our country! SO DO IT! If you do not vote: There is no penalty. However….

This could be what happens when people stop voting… We can become like Greece.

Or China…

Or Israel!?

Review Questions How do you become a naturalized citizen? What does it mean to deport someone? What is the draft? Name 3 responsibilities of citizens in America.
