A Mobile Solution to Tracking Invasive Species Treatment in Indiana

INvasives Mobile Project Some history on invasive treatment tracking Pilot project testing ArcGIS Mobile in the field Description of Trimble Juno Handheld Unit Demo of ArcGIS Mobile Outcome of the pilot & where we go next

Why invasive species ? Invasive plants are a major threat on a national scale Invasive species can harm the natural heritage of our wetlands, prairies, forests, lakes, and rivers, and have impacts hunting, fishing, bird watching, and other recreational pursuits The economic cost of invasive plants is estimated at more than $34 billion per year, and the costs continue to grow Tracking the results of treatments is a crucial measure of success in controlling invasive species for TNC staff

Collecting Invasive Species Treatments the Old Way TNC preserve stewards used GPS units and paper data forms to track treatments while in the field Back in the office, stewards converted their GPS data into a shapefiles and entered their paper data information into a local copy of an Access database Quarterly, each steward sent their shapefile and copy of the Access database to the Indiana Field Office At INFO, all of the database copies and shapefiles were rolled up into a master database and shapefile

ArcGIS Mobile and Trimble Juno handheld units provide a solution for TNC stewardship staff to be able use and access a central, spatially-enabled tracking database in the field ArcGIS Mobile and Trimble Juno handheld units provide a solution for TNC stewardship staff to be able use and access a central, spatially-enabled tracking database in the field Staff are able to upload and download real-time data to and from their satellite offices onto handheld Trimble Juno SC units and laptops Staff are able to upload and download real-time data to and from their satellite offices onto handheld Trimble Juno SC units and laptops Reduces the time and effort it takes for Indiana field stewards to enter data and create spatial data layers in the field Reduces the time and effort it takes for Indiana field stewards to enter data and create spatial data layers in the field Staff have the ability to easily create reports and maps with the most current data for invasive species treatments on all Indiana nature preserves Staff have the ability to easily create reports and maps with the most current data for invasive species treatments on all Indiana nature preserves A Better Way to Track Invasive Treatments in the Field

Invasives Mobile Workflow Handheld Unit

Juno Series Handheld Juno SB handheld –A small, lightweight field computer with integrated GPS and 3MP digital camera –Windows Mobile ® 6.1 Choice of 10 languages –Standard wireless WLAN and Bluetooth ® –DGPS accuracy of 2 to 5 meters Real-time SBAS or Postprocessed Juno SC handheld –Adds an integrated 3.5G cellular modem

Keeping you mobile and connected A truly portable solution, weighing in at only 240 g (0.53 lb) Cellular wireless connectivity means you can minimize trips back to the office –Juno SC handheld only Small enough to fit in your pocket –Users can be equipped at all times Belt clip available with the OtterBox protective case MicroSD/SDHC card slot for expandable memory Removable Li-Ion battery lasts a full day in the field Optional vehicle power adapter and windshield/dash mount accessories

Performance Maximize productivity Juno SB/SC handheld performs superbly under tree canopy Integrated high-sensitivity GPS receiver maximizes position yield in tough environments

Why choose the Juno? When productivity or price matter more than ruggedness or accuracy When you need a truly portable, complete data collection solution –Totally integrated: don’t carry a GPS, phone, and camera when a Juno series handheld does all three! –Backed by Trimble’s field-proven range of software and support When you need reliable, high-quality data collection at a price that allows them to equip their entire workforce When you need the ability to move data between the office and their workforce wirelessly –Juno SC handheld only

…is the next evolution of Trimble Juno handhelds. …maintains the Trimble Juno standards of providing an affordable, compact device that delivers an all-in-one mobile solution. …an even better value. –Rugged –Longer battery life –More memory –Improved screen –Higher resolution camera The new Trimble Juno series…

To get the most out of your current resources, Trimble provides the solution that lets you: Enable any employee to input data into your GIS Ensure the quality of your GPS data Guarantee the consistency of data collected Increase productivity by collecting positions in any location Stay in contact with office and field for real-time results Get more out of the field than ever before

This is like magic! Demo

The Indiana Chapter deployed 13 Trimble Juno SC units to test ArcGIS Mobile as a solution to track invasive species treatments at our nature preserves across Indiana With the completion of the pilot project, staff have successfully tracked treatments and uploaded those treatments to the geodatabase Pilot review is complete. On to the new improved version 2! Mobile Invasives Pilot Project

This is AWESOME! Um. But can we fix… From the field folks: Ability to turn on/off past treatment layer Some issues with GPS reception More than just polygons for treatments Group points/lines/shape for a single record

No, really, it is awesome. But, there’s this one thing… From the technical side: Imagery is HUGE. Updating it is a beast. Field staff cannot update drop down lists When changes are made to the domains, projects must be updated to reflect the changes Many things have to be done post-processing Issues with exporting to shapefile or Excel Master copy of geodatabase as a web service Reliance on staff: –post updates –update project
