Clonmel The History of our Town. Ms. Molloy

What street is this? Describe the picture.

Gladstone St.

What are the differences between this picture and the old picture? What’s the same?

Does this look fimiliar?

What are the similarities and differences?

Have a guess: What street is this?

How is the Main Guard different?

Where are we?

Can you find our school?

Where did “Clonmel” get it’s name from? The name “Cluain Meala” as gaeilge means “The Honey Meadow”.

What is our town famous for? Have you heard of Oliver Cromwell? Oliver Cromwell was a vicious warrior, sent to Ireland from England during the Plantation (1556 – 1641) to “plant” English people all over Ireland. What do you think I mean by the word “plant”? Cromwell and his fierce army took over many of the towns and cities around the country. But our town is known as the town of 2000 defenders who fought against Cromwell’s army of 8000 and managed to keep his forces out of the town for a small amount of time in May of The Walls of Clonmel, which were built in Medieval times, helped to protect the people Of Clonmel and keep Cromwell’s army out. Can you think of anywhere where the remains Of this wall can be seen?

These walls had four major entrances: One was located at the West Gate. The second was located near where the army barracks is today. The third was located on Kickham street. The final gate was located down on the quay. Cromwell travelled down to Clonmel via Fethard. He set up camp where Melview is today,on Prior Park Hill. Where is this in location to our school? On the day they defeated the people of Clonmel, they fired cannons from this hill and shot holes through the famous town walls. However, as the people had surrendered,They had escaped from the town and headed onto Waterford via Tickincor (near Ferryhouse) and onto Waterford. This is Clonmel’s biggest part in Irish History.

A Famous Figure from Clonmel- Charlies Bianconi. Is there any evidence today that Charles Bianconi was a famous figure in Clonmel? (hint- place names)

Charles Bianconi was born in Italy in 1786 and moved to Ireland in 1802 when he was 16. He was the mayor of Clonmel twice throughtout his life. Why was he famous? He was the founder of public transport in Ireland. He established horse drawn carriages on various routes which brought people all over Ireland. On these routes, there was Inns at the stops for the passengers, horses and drivers to take respite. Some of these Inns still exist today for example in Piltown, Co. Kilkenny. These services ran from 1815 until the 1850’s, by which time the country had established Railway lines. Bianconi died in Boherlahan, Co. Tipperary in 1875.

A painting and a sketch of the “Bianconi Carriages”.
