 Should this chemical be banned?  It can cause excessive sweating and vomiting.  It is a major component in acid rain.  It can cause severe burns in its gaseous state.  Accidental inhalation can kill you.  It contributes to erosion.  It decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes.  It has been found in tumors of terminal cancer patients.

 What is the chemical?  A student at Eagle Junior High School tried to get people to sign a petition to ban this chemical.  43 people signed the petition  6 people were undecided  Only 1 person knew what the chemical was  Title of science project was “How Gullible Are We?”

A Guide to Effective Resource Selection

 (1) Can I read and understand this on my own?  (2) Can I understand most of the words and not lose meaning if I have to skip words?  (3) Is the layout easy to follow?  (4) Can I stop and retell what I have just read in my own words?  (5) Are there pictures and charts that help me understand the text better?

 You will need a sheet of paper. Write the heading on your paper.  Take a book from the center of your table. The timer will be set for three minutes, and you need to review the book and answer the readability questions.  On your paper, record the book title and author. If you have answered yes to the questions, the book is one you can read. Indicate if this a book that you can read or not.  When the timer goes off, pass the book to your right.

 (1) Is the author or photographer identified with the source?  (2) Do I recognize the author or creator?  (3) Does the URL seem official or real?  (4) Have I found this same information in other books or websites?  (5) Does my gut feeling tell me what I am reading and seeing is trustworthy?  (6) Does this information fit with what I already know about this subject?
