What is an article? A piece of writing intended for publication in a newspaper or magazine It is important to attract the readers´ attention It can include amusing stories, reported speech or description It can be formal or informal depending on the readers You can give opinions, thoughts as well as facts. It should be interesting

What is the content of the article? It can describe an experience, an event, an person or a place It can present an opinion It can compare and contrast various things It can provides information It can offer a suggestion or advice

Title and organization Title should be eye-catching and attracts readers´ attention „TOWARDS A SLIMMER SOCIETY“ Organization: 1. Introduction 2. Main body 3. Conclusion

Ad 1) Introduction Define the topic and keep the readers´attention „OFCOM, the organization that regulates the media in the UK, has announced its decision to ban the advertising of foods high in fat, salt and sugar from children´s television in an effort to reduce child obesity.“ Do not present your opinion yet

Ad 2) Main body Write 2-5 paragraphs 1 paragraph = 1 idea / point Now you can give your opinion „Advertising is at least partly to blame. But should it be blame?Advertisers don´t think so.They cite freedom of speech. But I think freedom of speech may be restricted in the public interest.“ Support your opinion with arguments and examples from everyday life „Clearly, there is a problem. We see more and more overweight, unhealthy – looking children around us. You can look at the nearest hamburger place on a Saturday and see how many families are having lunch there.“

Ad 3) Conclusion Summarize the topic Return to the topic from the introduction Suggest solutions Refer to the future „Other steps can be taken to reduce child obesity. In supermarkets sweet should not be offered at a child´s eye level. Schools should offer healthier food. And perhaps most importantly, children should have more opportunities to do sports. But this advertising ban is a sensible move, which other countries might consider imitating. Let´s hope it helps us bring up slimmer, healthier future generations.“
