Ψ Sport- and Health Sciences The Challenge 2011

Ψ Sport- and Health Sciences We share common perspectives! noncommunicable diseases (CHD, Cancer, COPD, Diabetes) Risk Factors (weight, BMI, cholesterol etc.) common preventable risk behaviours (unhealthy diet, inactivity, tobacco use)

Ψ Sport- and Health Sciences Is there a gateway to health? HEALTH Physical Activity Healthy Nutrition Decent alcohol consum Decent alcohol consum No tabac consum (Kandel, D., (2002). Stages and Pathways of Drug Involvement. Examining the Gateway Hypothesis. New York. Cambridge University Press)

Ψ Sport- and Health Sciences Preventive Medicine 46 (2008) 216–221 Is physical activity a gateway behavior for diet? Findings from a physical activity trial Gareth R. Dutton a,*, Melissa A. Napolitano b, Jessica A. Whiteley c, Bess H. Marcus d a Florida State University College of Medicine, Department of Medical Humanities and Social Sciences, 1115 W. Call Street, Tallahassee, FL , USA b Temple University, Center for Obesity Research & Education, Philadelphia, PA 19140, USA c University of Massachusetts Boston, Department of Exercise and Health Sciences, Boston, MA 02125, USA d The Miriam Hospital and Brown Medical School, Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine, Providence, RI 02903, USA Conclusions. Although fat intake decreased in the context of this PA intervention, fruit/vegetable intake remained unchanged. Also, PA did not serve as a gateway behavior for dietary improvements. In fact, improvements in activity were associated with increases rather than decreases in fat intake.
