SWBAT Demonstrate safe behavior and appropriate procedures in all science inquiry activities. Enter Silently Grab Materials, Notebooks, Folders Begin Do Now 1. Make an observation: look at the green cups in the front of the room (on the lab desk). Write down everything you see about the cups. (color, look, shape, what’s in it, etc..) DO NOW

1. Always follow your teacher’s instructions. This includes obtaining your teacher’s permission to begin an investigation and/or to touch any equipment/supplies Horseplay or practical jokes will NOT be tolerated

2. Study the procedure before you begin Read ALL directions BEFORE starting an investigation or lab activity. If you have any questions, ask Mr. Wallace BEFORE you begin working.

3. Follow all safety restrictions Goggles and other lab clothing should be worn… ◦Any time chemicals, heat, and glassware are used ◦During the ENTIRE experiment ◦During clean up NO EXCEPTIONS

4. Never eat or drink in the lab. Never use lab glassware as food or drink containers. Do not taste any substances or draw any materials into a tube with your mouth. Never inhale chemicals either. Do NOT eat, drink, or chew gum

5. If you spill anything, clean it up immediately Report the spill to your teacher AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

6. Know the location and proper use of the safety equipment in the classroom. The safety equipment may include the fire extinguisher, safety shower, fire blanket, first aid kit, and fire alarm.

7. Keep all materials away from open flames. Tie back long hair and loose clothing. Always slant a test tube away from yourself and others when heating.

8. If a fire should break out in the classroom, report it to the teacher IMMEDIATELY! If your clothing should catch fire, smother it with a FIRE BLANKET DO NOT RUN! Move out of the way to allow your teacher to use the fire extinguisher. Then follow the fire drill instructions to leave the classroom.

9. Report any accident or injury, no matter how small, to your teacher.

10. Thoroughly clean your area and your hands when you are completely finished. Turn off the water and gas. Disconnect all electrical devices. Return all materials. Dispose of all materials as directed by your teacher. Don’t throw paper towels in the sink Wipe tables if necessary

Final Notes… Safety in the lab is the MOST important part of an investigation Misbehaving, disturbing other students, not following safety rules and/or lab directions is EXTREMELY dangerous and will not be tolerated Breaking lab safety rules can result in ◦Automatic reduction in citizenship grade to a “U” ◦Dean Referral ◦Removal from all lab work for the rest of the semester/year

Scenarios  At each station there is a scenario  It is your job to describe the rules being broken at each station  You will have 3 minutes at each station  Read the scenario out loud to your group and discuss what they did incorrectly before writing it down

Don’t Be That Guy Use common sense http://

Do Now What are 5 things people are doing correctly in this picture?

Lab Safety Activity You have a choice to create any of the following: ◦Comic strip ◦Newspaper article ◦Safety Quiz ◦WHAT YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE ON YOUR ACTIVITY IS OUTLINED ON YOUR ASSIGNMENT SHEET

Lab Safety Quiz In order to participate in labs you must:  Pass this quiz with at least an 80%  Turn in your lab safety contract If you do not pass the quiz with an 80%, you may retake it. Once finished you can: 1.Read silently. 2.Work on your lab safety project silently. 3.Write questions for the question box

Tracking Our Mastery We will be tracking how much we learn throughout the year, so we can create goals. 1.Complete the mastery worksheet for PART 1 of the pretest Divide the number correct, by the total number of questions for each category to find the percentage.
