Facility Design

Overall Design Process Planning committee Needs assessment Select construction process model Select architect Develop schematics Secure required funding Bid the construction Analyze bids and take action Begin construction Monitor construction

Pre-Planning Most important phase Process of identifying needs and communicating those needs Consider not only the program and educational needs but also finances, enrollment factors, and communicating with those outside the profession

Consider Administration’s Goals – Population to be serviced / traffic patterns – Others? Athletic Training Goals – Facility usage (patients, education, seminars) – Location within building – Access – Hours of operation – # people using space – Traffic patterns – Activities

Some General Considerations Ceiling Floors Walls Lighting Electrical service Plumbing service Telephone service Entrance/exit doors

Keep in mind Computers Walkie-talkies or cell phones Emergency lighting and electricity Multiple phone lines Limit the number of people with keys Main office unobstructed view of entire ATR Available natural light Drainage Noise control Traffic flow OSHA compliance

Areas to include Treatment Rehabilitation Hydrotherapy Taping / First Aid Offices Physician's exam room Pharmacy Dental X-ray room Orthotic / Special Pad fabrication Storage area Conference room / athletic training ;library Lavatory / shower/ locker room

Develop Schematics Graphical representations of what your needs and wants are for the facility Determining space needs – Min “bare bones “ is 300 sq ft – General: total square footage = (# patients at peak/ 20per table per day) X 100 – Proportion of work done in each section – Anticipated growth

Developing Schematics Traffic Patterns – Flow of people between areas – Develop a relationship chart ID subfunctions and justify space and location by placing them on a relationship chart Use coding systems provided – Bubble diagram Constructed next Based on closeness Not a floor plan; shows how the spaces should be laid out
