How to ride a bike. Journal of Riding Bikes, 6 (2),

5. How to reference a newspaper: Author, A. (year, month and day). Title of article. Newspaper, p. page number. Example: Burford, J. (2009, December 3). Riding Bikes in the 21st Century. Gulf News. p How to reference a tv show: Author, A. (Executive Producer). (year, month day). Name of tv show [Television Program]. Place aired, tv channel. Example: Burford, J. (Executive Producer). When using sources within your assignment, there are a number of ways to go about it. i.Using the author as a part of the discussion. In this instance, we use the authors surname only AND the year of their publication in brackets immediately after. If the page number is known, this can also be included. Eg. Burford (2010) suggests that bikes are one of the safest forms of transport. OR Burford (2010, p.63) suggests that bikes are one of the safest forms of transport.

When using the author within the sentence like this, it is a good idea to use a variety of descriptive words that show the author’s point of view. For Example: Burford (2010) suggests… Burford (2010) claims… Burford (2010) highlights… Burford (2010) proposes… WHAT OTHERS CAN YOU THINK OF???

ii.Using the author and date after the information (as well as the page number if you know it). Eg. Many academics argue that bikes are a safe form of public transport (Burford, 2010). OR Many academics argue that bikes are a safe form of public transport (Burford, 2010, p.63).

In academic writing, if you are trying to prove a point, it is good to find multiple sources which suggest the same thing. For Example: Al Ali (2011) points out that bikes are a cost effective mode of transport for people in developing countries. In support of this, Al Suwaidi (2009) recognizes that bikes due to having many brands in the market now, the cost of bikes are more accessible than ever to people of all economic backgrounds.
