SCAR DIMS Implementation 31st July 2010 Kim Finney (Manager, Australian Antarctic Data Centre & Chief Officer, SCAR Standing Committee on Antarctic Data Management)

DIMS Implementation Plan Project 1 –Interoperable Data Repository Network –3 sub-tasks ISO metadata profile Registry service Demo Portals Project 2 –Improving Relevance and Utility of SCAR Products –2 sub-tasks SCAR Product marketing SCAR product marketing Project 3 –Polar Information Commons –3 sub-tasks Badge data as PIC PIC repository network PIC Cloud

Building A Better SCAR Data Infrastructure Antarctic Master Directory (with a registry interface) (NASA) Standard machine to machine interfaces data store Data Portal Scientists are able to use a data discovery portal from one country, that can also access data from another countrys data store. data store Harvests from Service Registry Portals Standard Interfaces Protocols

Building A Better SCAR Data Infrastructure What if I dont have anywhere to put my data but Im happy to share it ? data bucket Internet Cloud Tom Jerry I wonder what data is out there for the polar regions ? Submit data Metadata Catalogue & Registry Register in Discover/retrieve Polar data Search Publish to

Badging Data Three functions of badge: Labels data with conditions of use Labels data as being part of commons Links to norms (expected behaviours for data usage)

Cloud Services

How Can Your Country Contribute ? Low entry barrier Make your existing data public and aligned with PIC via a PIC badge (using GCMD tool). Volunteer to help define the Polar ISO metadata profile. More Effort Required Volunteer to modify an existing Portal to fit the architecture (of the repository network) we want to put in place. Build a new Portal Register data services (Note: not the same as just metadata) in our agreed registry so that Portals can use these web services.

Issues How many people understand the vision ? What are the barriers to participation ?
