Bio-Diesel Bio-Diesel= a non-petroleum-based diesel fuel consisting of short chain alkyl (methyl or ethyl) esters, made by transesterification of vegetable oil or animal fat (tallow), which can be used (alone, or blended with conventional petrodiesel) in unmodified diesel-engine vehicles. Disadvantages Disadvantages Slightly lower fuel economy and power (10% lower for B100, 2% for B20) Slightly lower fuel economy and power (10% lower for B100, 2% for B20) Currently more expensive Currently more expensive More nitrogen oxide emissions More nitrogen oxide emissions Transportation & storage of B100 require special management Transportation & storage of B100 require special management B100 generally not suitable for use in low temperatures B100 generally not suitable for use in low temperatures Concerns about B100's impact on engine durability Concerns about B100's impact on engine durability

Interesting information Depending on the process, the reaction takes one hour. Then the biodiesel must sit for 8 hrs (unless a centrifuge is used to separate the glycerine from the biodiesel). Depending on the process, the reaction takes one hour. Then the biodiesel must sit for 8 hrs (unless a centrifuge is used to separate the glycerine from the biodiesel). Is Biodiesel good for my engine? Yes. It's a better lubricator than petro-diesel and tends to be a better cleaning agent for your fuel system. It also has a higher Cetane rating, which means it's a better fuel. Biodiesel is not compatible with ordinary rubber. If your fuel system has rubber fittings they can be replaced with Viton to counter this, However, most modern Diesel engines do not use rubber fittings anymore.

Saftey In making Biodiesel they work with some dangerous chemicals. Methanol, Caustic Soda, Caustic Potash, and methoxide are the chemicals in question. All of these chemicals have been around a very long time and safety procedures have been developed that make working with them safer. In making Biodiesel they work with some dangerous chemicals.
