1 Establishing Korea Polar Data Center Min Choul Lee (Korea Polar Research Institute)

2 - Contents - I.Brief history II.Data management system III.Next plan

3 I. Brief history

Establishing Korea Polar Data Center 4 I. Brief history KOPRI was separated from KORDI and became an independent polar research institution Check validity on establishing data center Visited AADC and discussed transfer AADCs system to KOPRI Hold that process because of lack of budget and specialist Created master plan to build Korea polar data center Made draft of data management policy Developed metadata management system 2011 Confirmed and enforced the draft data management policy Redeveloped the metadata management system Introduced the mass storage system

5 II. Data management system 1.Concept of KPDC 2.Data Management Policy 3.Organization & Budget 4.Data Management System

Establishing Korea Polar Data Center 6 II. Data Management System 1. Concept of KPDC About 100TB capacity 6TB capacity Dept. Information & Knowledge Relationship Transport Data Metadata Data Management System Digital Data Archiving Storage Digital Data Downloading System Data Management Policy Relationship

Establishing Korea Polar Data Center 7 II. Data Management System 2. Data Management Policy Data Range Embrace Antarctic data and Arctic data related with research program, expedition and other activity The Point of registration and opening Guarantee data quality Data management policy : RegistrationOpening MetadataRight after acquisitioningAs soon as confirmed by administrator Raw DataWithin 3 months from the date of acquisition 3 years later from the date of acquisition Freely open and share Freely open and share all Antarctic and Arctic data

Establishing Korea Polar Data Center 8 II. Data Management System 3. Organization & Budget Organization Set up an dept. of information and knowledge in 2010 Major Role Manage polar data Develope & maintenance MIS Manage intellectual property Operating Library Staff : all 6 person 2 persons are dedicated to KPDC Budget KPDC Secure about 600,000$(US) annually

Establishing Korea Polar Data Center 9 II. Data Management System 4. Data Management System OS : Linux DB : MySQL Dev. Tool : PHP Period : ~ Etc : Based on JOOMLA CMS ( Functions Metadata Authoring Tool Data Searching Tool Characteristics Simplicity Flexibility Usability Metadata Management System Dev. Environment Functions & Characteristics

Establishing Korea Polar Data Center 10 II. Data Management System 4. Data Management System Function #1. Metadata Authoring Tool Similar user interface to DocBuilder

Establishing Korea Polar Data Center 11 II. Data Management System 4. Data Management System Function #2. Data Searching Tool

Establishing Korea Polar Data Center 12 II. Data Management System 4. Data Management System Characteristics #1 – Simple Database Design Only 4 entities used for saving all Metadata element 1.Schema Definition Entity 2.Schema Value Save Entity 3.Metadata Catalog Information Entity 4.Keyword Entity

Establishing Korea Polar Data Center 13 II. Data Management System 4. Data Management System Characteristics #2 – Flexibility Easy to change the metadata schema With out any additional entity, we can add or remove metadata element Possible to manage other type of metadata, just only define metadata schema

14 III. Next Plan

Establishing Korea Polar Data Center 15 III. Next Plan Encourage scientists to register their own data Give 20$ incentive per data Register metadata and raw data Put PIC badge to the metadata and involve PIC cloud Development more tools Metadata Schema Authoring Tool Keyword Management Tool XML Document Export and Import Tool Improve system function Bug Fix Optimize database & Application System Optimize I wish this program are widely used for other scientific disciplinary, university and institute in Korea. Open Source Project

16 Thank you very much!!!
