Joint SCAR/COMNAP Committee on Antarctic Data Management Introduction to SCADM Potential for collaboration between AAA and SCADM The SCAR Data and Information Strategy SCAR Standing Committee on Antarctic Data Management

Joint SCAR/COMNAP Committee on Antarctic Data Management Why SCADM? Scientific observations and results from Antarctica shall be exchanged and made freely available (Antarctic Treaty, Article III.1.c) Data and information are primary assets derived from Antarctic Research, and so must be carefully managed to enable effective use, both now and in the future The Standing Committee on Antarctic Data Managers (SCADM) was established to coordinate the development of the Antarctic Data Management System (ADMS). SCAR Standing Committee on Antarctic Data Management

Joint SCAR/COMNAP Committee on Antarctic Data Management The Antarctic Data Management System SCADM coordinates the Antarctic Data Management System. This includes: a)National Antarctic Data Centres (NADC) – responsible for ensuring long-term archiving of all data b)The Antarctic Master Directory (AMD) – a directory of dataset descriptions, to enable discovery of data for interdisciplinary use SCAR Standing Committee on Antarctic Data Management

Joint SCAR/COMNAP Committee on Antarctic Data Management SCADM highlights The Antarctic Master Directory – over 4700 Antarctic and Southern Ocean datasets are now listed and described in the AMD Dedicated project metadata portals International cooperation – setting Antarctic data in a global context SCADM liaisons (SCAR SSGs, SRPs, SOOS, etc) Production of SCAR Data and Information Strategy SCAR Standing Committee on Antarctic Data Management

Joint SCAR/COMNAP Committee on Antarctic Data Management SCADM and SSG-PS Two liaison officers: Helen Campbell – SSG-PS, AGCS, ECA Claudio Rafanelli – ICESTAR Do we need one now for AAA? Data management requirements include: A metadata catalogue, as an inventory of data holdings Access to data Data curation to enable long-term access SCAR Standing Committee on Antarctic Data Management

Joint SCAR/COMNAP Committee on Antarctic Data Management The SCAR standard metadata catalogue is the Antarctic Master Directory (based on the Global Change Master Directory standard) Why use AMD Many existing metadata records (over 4700 records in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean) Portals can be customised for specific uses (e.g. EBA portal) Can provide direct access to data Important notes: Astrophysics keywords are now available in the AMD Keyword changes can be recommended to AMD ACTIONS – nominate a contact to work with GCMD to improve astrophysics keywords? - Create a portal for AAA? SCADM and SSG-PS SCAR Standing Committee on Antarctic Data Management

Joint SCAR/COMNAP Committee on Antarctic Data Management The SCAR Data and Information Management Strategy Why have we produced the strategy? SCADM has been successful in promoting Antarctic Data Management within the SCAR Community Similarly the Standing Committee on Antarctic Geographic Information (SC- AGI) has successfully developed a range of quality products However, their work to date has not been supported by a Comprehensive Strategy Therefore, in 2006 the SCAR Executive asked SCADM and SC-AGI to produce a SCAR Data and Information Management Strategy The Strategy defines how the Antarctic Data Management System should be implemented SCAR Standing Committee on Antarctic Data Management

Joint SCAR/COMNAP Committee on Antarctic Data Management The SCAR Data and Information Management Strategy What does the Strategy address? Emphasises that good science is founded on good data management Focuses on the framework required to support the goals of SCAR to coordinate high quality, international scientific research, and advise on the role of the Antarctic region in Earth Systems Aims to address the following issues: Data Discovery – How will data be found Data Access – How will people and systems access data Data Quality – How should data quality be guaranteed, recorded and communicated Data Exchange and Integration – How will data be understood and integrated with other datasets, in an interdisciplinary environment Data Archiving – How should data be managed to enable re-use in the future SCAR Standing Committee on Antarctic Data Management

Joint SCAR/COMNAP Committee on Antarctic Data Management The SCAR Data and Information Management Strategy How will it help you? In many ways! For example, the strategy recommends: That scientists should be rewarded for sharing data, through development of data citation systems Increasing the utility of data centres to SCAR science through the creation of a strong and well-coordinated network of designated, permanent data centres providing enhanced data services Enabling interoperability of datasets and systems for data discovery, integration and aggregation, through implementation of standards The development of a SCAR Data Policy to clarify obligations with regards to data access That SCAR should capitalise on the activities of existing operational data management networks, such as the World Data Centre System SCAR Standing Committee on Antarctic Data Management

Joint SCAR/COMNAP Committee on Antarctic Data Management Conclusions Professional data management is an intrinsic part of good science data management is too important to be left to data managers alone. It should be part of good scientific practice SCADM Review SCADM and SSG-PS should work together to: Create data discovery portals for PS programs in the AMD Contribute to, and develop databases/data portals in line with the SCAR Data and Information Strategy The first draft of the strategy is on the SCADM website, and there are posters and summary documents which provide a brief overview of it Its your strategy! SCAR needs feedback from you about the usefulness of the SCAR Data Strategy to SSG-PS. Sergio Marenssi is leading the current working group, and Maurizio Candidi is the PS representative SCAR Standing Committee on Antarctic Data Management
